2018 Atomic Backland FR 109 Skis
The Atomic Backland FR 109 is a super fun backcountry, sidecountry, or just wide playful all mountain ski. The 109 mm waist width gives it excellent float in soft snow, although isn't so wide that it's only appropriate in deep powder. You can still ski the Backland FR 109 around the rest of the mountain just fine. These skis use what Atomic calls HRZN Tech. This is essentially lateral (horizontal) rocker across the tip of the ski. It kind of looks like the bow of a boat, or at least the hull of said boat, although is somewhat subtle. What this does is give the ski even more flotation, less tip deflection, and more efficient tracking through chopped up, tricky conditions. There's something visual about it too; it gives you a really surfy, maneuverable feel just looking at the tip. The Backland FR 109 uses a lightweight woodcore that's supported by a Carbon Backbone. This construction is impressively lightweight, but still has solid stability and torsional stiffness thanks to the carbon insert that runs the full length of the ski. With camber underfoot you can actually carve some turns on groomers, although this ski certainly shines in soft snow. A great choice for the adventurous all mountain skier constantly seeking powder.
