#1: The Battle for “Park City” Rages on:
One bit of news that we’ve been relatively mum about since it’s broken is the ongoing legal debate between Vail resorts and the Park City municipality and local businesses over the rights to the “Park City” name. After combining Park City and Canyon Resorts last season, Vail began referring to the combined resort simply as “Park City”. Then, back in May, they filed a trademark application for exclusive rights to the name, enraging local residents and businesses alike. The city itself was relatively quiet about the whole thing until earlier this week when they received a letter from Vail resorts in which they stated their intentions to see the trademark application through with no intentions to withdraw it. Apparently this was the last straw for Park City Mayor Jack Thomas who decided it was his time to throw his hat into the ring. As should be expected, he took the side of his constituents and sent out an open letter rebutting Vail’s claims. Both letters have since been made public and can be read in full over on the Freeskier website.
#2: Mike Douglas Talks About the Realities of Extreme Skiing:
It’s time to take a sober tone for a minute here. When a legend of our sport has something to say, it’s typically wise to listen. Earlier this week Mike Douglas was featured in a video released by Snows Best in which he discusses the realities of skiing- in particular the correlation between adrenaline and risk. Having been a professional skier since the early days of twin tips, (and the man whom the D-Spin is named after), Mike Douglas has seen it all, from early urban skiing exploits, to ski base jumping and double spins. He’s also seen numerous friends pass away as a result of their never-ending quest to one-up their last adrenaline high. It’s a topic that we discussed in our “Finding the Limit - Reflections on the Cost of Skiing’s Progression” article, but hearing it from someone who’s witnessed it first hand gives is a whole new perspective. We’ll hold our tongue from here, but if you haven’t already, we highly recommend giving the above video a watch.
#3: Level 1 Productions Announces Their 17th Movie:
Alright, back to the good news! Just a couple of days ago, Level 1 Productions announced their 17th feature film: Pleasure. A quick look at the movie’s description on the Level 1 website indicates that this year’s movie will be centered around the joy skiing brings professional skiers- regardless of the hardships incurred during the course of filming. From injuries and empty wallets to limitless Japanese powder and (literally) picture perfect terrain parks, the life of skiers is undeniably filled with juxtapositions of pain and pleasure. With this in mind, we’ve got to imagine the film will seek to highlight this reality while showcasing some of the absolute best skiing from this past year. On the athlete side of things the roster is filled with faces old and new: Will Wesson, LJ Strenio, McRae Williams, KC Deane, Sandy Boville, Tanner Rainville, Wiley Miller, Shay Lee, Keegan Kilbride, Thayne Rich, and tons more. It’s still a ways away, but we can’t help but feel the early twangs of excitement as ski season moves inevitably closer.
#4: Lindsey Vonn is Single, and Totally Down to Date a Ski Bum:
They say money can’t buy you happiness. Well, apparently being an incredible athlete who just so happens to be really, really, really ridiculously good looking doesn’t always do the trick either. Such is the case with Lindsey Vonn who spoke with reporters at CNN this week while filming for an upcoming Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups ad. Speaking on the topic, Vonn said she’d love to be a mom, if only she was able to find the right guy. Her problem, ironically, is that she’s been too successful, saying, “normal guys are too intimidated and the guys that have enough confidence, have too much confidence.”
What does this mean for ski bums like us? Well, two things. First, dude, we totally have a chance! But second, and more importantly, Lindsey needs us guys. It’s our duty to make sure someone as talented and beautiful as Lindsey Vonn isn’t single and lonely. So if you’re lucky enough to bump into Ms. Vonn at your local Aprés Ski watering hole this Winter, do the right thing. Be a confident (but not too confident) gentleman and offer to buy her a drink. Tell her you believe in her, and assure her that you’ll be there for her no matter what. Then, before the night’s through, let her know that if she’s a bird, you’re a bird. We’ve been told that these are things women like.
#5: And Now, Your Edit of the Week: SLVSH
Rounding out this week is an edit that freeskiers will be overjoyed to see. Not necessarily because it’s the best episode of SLVSH ever, but because it’s new. Over the past month and a half or so, there were murmurings within the freeski community that SLVSH had come to an end due to financial struggles. With the release of this most recent edit, those concerns can be put to rest, at least for now. Click here or on the image above to watch the edit.
