The Marker Baron is a popular touring binding that helped kick off the trend of frame touring bindings that function like alpine bindings, including consistent release, but allow for uphill capabilities. If you're idea of touring is going up just for the enjoyment of coming back down then frame touring bindings are probably the best option for you. The Baron uses a toe and heel piece that's identical to their alpine bindings, and more specifically in this case the Griffon. It gives you an excellent connection to your skis and the snow underneath. The alpine toe and heel piece are positioned on what Marker calls their Extended Power Frame. This frame then pivots around a single point just in front of the toe piece allowing you to unlock the entire frame to put the binding into touring mode. While the Baron 13 EPF might not be the lightest touring binding on the market, it offers a relatively even mix of uphill and downhill capabilities. It'll get you up the skin track and allows you to be just as aggressive on the way back down as you would be on your alpine ski and binding setup. In fact, they have such good downhill performance you'll even see skiers using a Baron on a one-ski-quiver for both alpine and AT use. The new Sole ID toe piece allows for any ski boot to function properly from full alpine all the way to touring soles.
