Volkl Secret 96 Women's Skis

The Volkl Secret 96 women's skis fill a nice niche in the all-mountain category for expert skiers who are looking for that mid-90's ski to take them anywhere and anywhere that skiing and snow exists. We talk a lot about the mid-90's skis and their ability to be everything to every expert skier, from deep carves to floaty through the fresh, and competent and precise in the bumps and trees. The Secret 96 basically eliminates the need for any other ski. You may want other skis as well, and we're not going to stop you, but from a "need" perspective, this is the one you "need." Built as a twin to the M6 Mantra but with a different graphic and different sizes available, the Secret 96 is a burly ski but is a lot more approachable than you may think. Quick edge to edge, the Secret 96 is the beneficiary of Volkl's 3D Radius Sidecut, allowing the skier to make any shape of turn at any time and in any conditions or terrain. This makes it a lot more intuitive to carve at turn at any speed. Shorter turns underfoot and longer in the tips and tails, the Secret 96 is smooth and precise at the same time. It's this ability to hold multiple personalities at the same time that will make the Secret 96 a perennial winner in this crowded all-mountain category, but it earns it well.

Features:

  • Sidecut: 135/96/119 mm at 163 cm length
  • Turn Radius: 24/14/20 meters at 163 cm length
  • Multi-Layer Wood Core
  • Tailored Titanal Frame
  • Tailored Carbon Tips
  • Tip and Tail Rocker
  • 3D Radius Sidecut
  • Ability level: Expert Skiers

I see that this is 4mm wider than the previous version. How much of a difference does that actually make? Any other changes?
Question by: Leanna Peppercorn on Mar 3, 2021, 1:00 AM
HI Leanna!
This is a new model for Volkl, as the Secret construction basically came in the Kenja 88, Secret 92, and 102. The 96 is a mirror of the men's Mantra M6, containing tailored titanal frame, tailored carbon, and like the Mantra, Volkl's 3D Radius Sidecut. So you are getting a different ski with the Secret 96 versus the other skis in this range from volkl. This allows Volkl to adjust the flex of the ski more appropriately with the length, creating a more versatile ski. Have fun!

How would you compare the performance of the new Secret 96 to the Blaze 94 Women's? Similar dimensions all around. Both have 3D Radius Sidecut. Clearly the construction is different (Blaze's wood core and rubber tips vs. Secret 96's TFP + Carbon tips). How does that translate to performance for edgehold/crud busting? And to which type of skier does each suit? Also, my understanding is that the Secret 96 would give you similar performance to the Secret 92 but isn't as demanding on the skier for input. Can you confirm?
Question by: Pamela Kauveiyakul on Apr 20, 2021, 8:12 AM
Hi Pamela, Both skis are advanced skis but have different perks. The Blaze 94 is much lighter underfoot, giving it a little more pep in the crud, easier to pop the turn because the swing weight is less. This makes the Blaze more approachable for a wider range of ladies. Most of the ladies that love this ski can ski really well but wanted something a little more forgiving than a ski with metal in them. The Secret 96 is more aggressive, and heavy, making it more powerful. Instead of popping off crud it goes straight thru. The mental in the construction gives it power to get thru all the conditions and hold a strong edge while carving. As for the shape difference, there is not much, the Secret is definitely geared towards more carving and aggressive turns while the Blaze is geared more towards all mountain, with less carving performance, and more all mountain conditions and terrain. You are correct that the new Secret construction is going to be less demanding then the previous 92, since they have lightened up the construction in the new model. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions, Best, Alli

Hi, I am 166cm tall. I am definitely looking for fast aggressive ski on a big mountain, no cruising around, for that I got other skis. My dilemma is whether to go for the 163cm or 170cm version? My slalom skis are 160, but can easily ski 165 too. My touring skis are 168cm and 175cm.
Question by: Lucie on Oct 26, 2021, 5:14 PM
Hi Lucie,
I would go with the 170cm option, the secret will ski a little short than that with the rocker in it, and the longer length will give you a bit more stability as higher speeds.
Thanks,

My wife LOVES the Secret 92. Our question: is the Secret 96 going to ski like the Secret 92 with a touch more powder ability but otherwise ski pretty much like the secret 92? Or should she stick to the Secret 92?
Question by: Frank R Walther on Aug 5, 2021, 6:22 AM
The new Secret 96 will offer a very similar feel to the 92, with improved soft snow performance. Combined with the new 3D Radius technology, the new Secret 95 will offer an even more versatile performance than the 92.

Hello - i am looking to get my daughter some new skis. She had a big growth spurt and her old skis were Jr Mantra 148. She is 5-5 115lb, would you suggest 156 or 163? She likes to go in woods and all over. Aggressive skier. Thanks!
Question by: Chris on Jan 20, 2022, 4:37 PM
Hi Chris,

She should go for the 163 length based on her stats. Plenty of ski as well so as she grows weight and height wise, she will have plenty of performance left in that ski to grow with her as well.

Have fun! The Secret is a great ski and SE Tester favorite!
