2018 Volkl RTM 76 Elite Skis

The RTM 76 Elite is an affordable all mountain ski that’s designed to offer relatively easy skiing to beginner and intermediate skiers. Unlike its wider, burlier brothers in the RTM line, the 76 Elite does not use any metal in its construction. This makes it much lighter, a little bit softer flexing, and takes away some torsional stiffness. Having less torsional stiffness might sound like a negative, but for developing skiers it actually makes turn initiation much easier and it takes some relatively powerful skiing to push the ski passed its limits in terms of edge grip on firm snow, something that beginner and intermediate skiers are less likely to do. While it’s not a top of the line ski, it has a perfect application for less aggressive skiers who like to ski on groomed slopes.

Mike Aidala might not fit into the categories of “less aggressive” or “beginner to intermediate,” but we had him test the RTM 76 Elite anyways and his response is somewhat surprising. While one might have expected Mike to brush off the RTM 76 Elite as a ski that doesn’t match his level of skiing, it was quite the contrary. Mike had a lot of fun skiing a 168 cm RTM 76 Elite and went as far as scoring it 5 out of 5 for quickness, maneuverability, forgiveness, and even overall impression! His first comment on the ski is that it’s a “perfect ‘stop renting’ purchase.” We certainly agree, although it’s more than that too. For skiers who have been stuck going to the rental shop for years (gosh… even just once is enough for us) the RTM 76 Elite is an affordable option that will actually save you money in the long run while providing a better skiing experience than 99% of rental skis you’ll encounter. Mike, however, did not think the RTM 76 Elite is reduced to being skied by only ex-renters. He went on to say that it could be a “great setup for a wide range of ski abilities. It’s quick edge to edge and makes all types of turn shapes, although it definitely has a speed limit not having any metal in its construction.” If you like skiing at high speeds the RTM 76 Elite likely isn’t for you, but if moderate speeds are more your cup of tea it provides great responsiveness on firm snow.

Carly Monahan is more aligned with the target market of the RTM 76 Elite and her thoughts and experiences correspond. While being very athletic, Carly does not have the same ski background as Mike and is significantly less aggressive. After skiing a 163 cm she described the RTM 76 Elite as “responsive and solid. It felt very reliable and predictable on edge.” We think predictability is a good word for this ski. It’s not going to buck you if you make a mistake or if your weight gets thrown back, rather has a relatively calm, easy-going feel. Carly continued, “it was easy to really lean into turns and trust that the ski would be there and carry me through to a nice snappy exit.” For Carly the RTM 76 Elite was a confidence inspiring ski. She didn’t feel overpowered, yet felt sufficiently supported.

Carly thinks it is “great for someone who sticks to groomers, but skis in variable conditions.” We can agree with that statement, although we’d like to add in “less-aggressive” as well. Skiers who like to really charge will be left looking for more out of the RTM 76 Elite, however slower, slightly less aggressive skiers will find tremendous value in the ski’s performance to price ratio.
