2019 Blizzard Firebird WRC Skis

The Firebird series is an all-new model line from Blizzard that redefines on-trail performance. You could look at them as de-tuned race skis, or super high-end system skis, but either way, the WRC rips. This ski is the GS version whereas the other two are shorter turn radius skis. With full on race room construction and carbon layering, the Firebird WRC is ready for the hardest snow and the steepest slopes. Our testers all skied the 180 cm version, and all commended the ski on its obvious strengths. They marveled at the speed and stability of this brand new model from Blizzard’s race department.

Hans Von Briesen noted that the ski was not that forgiving or floaty. He did, however mark it high for overall impression and edge grip. “Fast, stable, quick transitions. Advanced ski for open slope skiing. Exceptional for GS carving but will show versatility when necessary. Very solid to stand on.” Hans makes mention of the ability level of the pilot necessary to elicit the proper performance level of the skis. Most keywords used by all of our testers have some type of reference to speed and/or strength.

Benny Wax “didn’t realize how fast I was going until I tried to stop.” That’s great stuff from Benny, here in regards to the stable nature of the ski. Like riding in a luxury sports sedan going 120 down the highway, yet it seems like you’re going 35, such is the reaction from skiers on the WRC. The stability and strength of the ski allow you to go faster than you otherwise might on a less substantial ski. Benny called it “stable and turny when you want it. Quiet and smooth!” He ends his review with a notable quote: “If you like speed, this is the steed!”

Jason Krupsky found himself on all of the on-trail rippers like this one, and had nothing but glowing information as to the performance level and high-end feel of the WRC. “If you are looking for a great cheater GS ski for masters or beer leagues, these are your sticks. Great edge grip and stability with a short enough radius (18.5 m) for tighter GS courses. Nice energy generated out of the tail, and plenty of torsional rigidity.” Jason makes note of the racing capabilities of the skis, and it’s worth noting that these are not FIS certified; they are citizen race skis only.

James Stewart scored the skis predictable 5’s for stability, torsional stiffness, and edge hold. His overall impression score of 5 tells us that he was pretty much stoked at the performance of the skis. “They just look fast,” he says. James echoes Jason in his assertion that they would make the “ultimate beer league ski” and that they are “not for the faint of heart” and “hardly a ‘consumer’ ski.” So be warned, according to James, the Blizzard Firebird WRC is the real deal.

These on-trail race skis are an awesome example of a product that has a pretty specific market, but within that market, it does really well. For skiers who are looking to totally and completely dominate the fresh groomed terrain of the mountain, and those who are looking for a competitive leg up on the local race league, the all-new Blizzard Firebird WRC are the skis for you.
