2020 Rossignol Evo XC 50

The Rossignol EVO XC 50 is a fantastic ski for entry level or intermediate XC skiers. It’s designed to function both in groomed tracks and in ungroomed, natural snow. It has a supple flex in the tip and tail, which helps give it a very confidence-inspiring feel for new XC skiers. You’ll feel like you’re in control of the XC 50 no matter where you take it. This version of the XC 50 is offered with a waxless Positrack base, which is going to have more consistent grip and kick compared to the R-Skin version of this ski. For new skiers, that’s often a benefit as it will make climbing a little easier. It’s not quite as fast and doesn’t glide as well as the R-Skin, but that’s generally not a concern for a recreational skier.

Bob St.Pierre tested the 196 cm length and found it to be a “wonderful touring experience.” Bob thought it has “consistent flide with a very nice overall feel.” His highest scores were for stability, maneuverability, and versatility, all perfect traits for a beginner/intermediate level ski. Bob did note that they were on the heavy end compared to more expensive models, but that’s part of why they feel so stable and it’s a good trade-off for someone just getting into the sport. “Perfect for an entry level to intermediate skier who is looking to maximize efficiency and fun.”

Jeffrey Siegel also tested that 196 cm length and as a beginner skier himself, he really enjoyed its performance. High scores from Jeff for stability, versatility, kick/grip, and overall impression. “The XC 50 is a great do anything ski. It goes up well, stable on the downhills, and even somewhat comfortable in untracked and ungroomed snow conditions.” Jeff tested th R-Skin version of this ski as well, and he noted that “it grips easier than the R-Skin version. The R-Skin requires better technique, the scale version is more easy going.” He added another comment about glide as well, saying that “it slides well, but not super fast.” We consider that a good thing, as sometimes beginner and intermediate level skiers aren’t comfortable with a really fast nordic ski. It can feel like the ski is running away from you, and without the balance provided by alpine boots and stiff skis, that can be an unnerving experience.

Just like Jeff, Josh Wolfgang is relatively new to the sport of XC skiing. Also like Jeff, he really enjoyed skiing the XC 50. We saw a lot of really high scores from Josh, including 5 out of 5 for stability and a whole slew of 4s out of 5. “This ski is perfect for the beginner to intermediate (like me) skier. Very stable, but still has decent glide. Was good both in track and off the trail.”

Recrational skiers looking for a fun, easy ski will love the XC 50. It’s not going to win any races and it’s not wide enough for really deep backcountry conditions, but if you’re just looking to get out on your local trails, power lines, or golf courses, it’s a perfect ski that will provide years of fun on snow.
