For most of us, the majority of our time is spent on some form of groomed trail. Whether it’s by intent or accident, the front side of the mountain is where most skiers spend most of their time. It behooves us, then, to have a ski that aligns with what we do most often to maximize fun and efficiency. The 2024 Fischer RC One 82 GT is a prime example of a wider-bodied front side ski that holds an amazing edge on hard pack and has some extra bounce to it for variable conditions and terrain. While we wouldn’t go so far as to include this in the all-mountain realm, mainly because of the squared-off shaping, it’s versatile enough for those select days that have softer or broken snow to mix in with the ice. Rarely is it one thing all day, so it’s nice to have a ski that adapts to the changing conditions. For Fischer, the 82 GT is an amazing offering for hard-charging advanced and expert skiers who know how to carve a clean turn.

Construction-wise, this ski follows the trend of having a mix of lively and dense wood in the core as well as multiple sheets of metal. The blend of poplar and beech wood in this ski makes a lot of sense, especially considering the rugged beech wood allows the ski to feel planted in the snow and confident in a carve. The poplar gives the ski a bit of snap, but it’s balanced by the metal to keep the ski pretty stable and strong. With two layers of titanal in the ski, including free-milled titanium for extra ruggedness, the RC One 82 GT offers an incredible amount of power. Tipping the scale at 2250 grams in the 173, it’s kind of a handful, but if you can tame it, you’ll be rewarded with a ski that’s as smooth as they come. Turn Zone keeps it somewhat manageable by removing the metal in the tips and tails along the side. As a result, it’s easier to enter and exit the turn, but the central and main portion of the ski remain burly and solid.

At 82 mm underfoot in the 173, the ski is wide enough to move slightly into the all-mountain zone from purely a shape standpoint, but it doesn’t make a lot of sense to put it there mainly because it’s such an amazing carver. It’s wide for a front side ski, but that’s okay because the width lends to a more stable platform. In the 173, we’re getting a 16-meter turn radius, and that’s great for ripping clean carved turns across the fall line and laying down some sweet arcs in the snow. Even if it’s firm, the skis will bite in and hold tight to the turn. While Fischer claims that there’s all-mountain rocker in this ski, it’s very much a cambered product. Sure, there’s a bit of rocker at the very ends to allow for entry and exit from the turn, but for the most part, this ski doesn’t have anything resembling rocker in the way that we think about it these days. It’s square and sharp, making it a great ski for burly and rugged front side affairs any day of the year.

Skis like this can often get overlooked, and that’s a shame, because in reality, most of us ski on groomers much of the time. Having a ski that’s planted and confident in a carved turn is very beneficial as it allows for the right equipment on the right days. While we wouldn’t consider this a one-ski quiver, especially for those that find themselves in a mix of terrain and conditions, for many skiers, this shape and style is a lot more useful than a mid-90's all-mountain ski. The 2024 Fischer RC One 82 GT is one of those skis that just makes sense from a reality and performance standpoint.
