This one jumped off the page at us last year and left us wondering why we don’t spend way more time on skis like this in a daily format. The 2024 Blizzard Thunderbird R15 WB LTD (hereafter known as the R15) has so much usefulness in the on-piste and front side world. At 76 mm underfoot and with a burly build, this ski can hold a sharp and clean edge, rolling from one turn to the next with energy and purpose. We found that, when we first got on the ski two seasons ago now, that up to that point in the winter, this would be an ideal ski for 38 out of the first 42 days of the year. That’s a huge percentage of time, and if you think about what that means in the grand scheme, it turns out we all may be on skis that are way too wide. The carving capabilities are so much fun in this ski, and since it has that wider bodied footprint, there’s at least some versatility here—you just have to work considerably harder to get there.

Blizzard’s TrueBlend wood core is the main culprit of this amazing performance, linking 11 dense beech stringers among 3 lighter and livelier poplar blocks. The beech does most of the heavy lifting here, stretching tip to tail in the center and tapering to shorter lengths as they approach the sides of the ski. This leaves the sides somewhat unencumbered by the heavier wood and increases the friendly nature of the ski by just a bit. On top and bottom of the ski, we get two layers of titanal to increase the dampness, power, and grip. It adds some weight for sure, especially when used in the Duramax construction which is just a burlier way of putting skis together. We also get Active Carbon Armor in the ski, functioning as a sliding carbon plate that flexes with the ski to promote stiffness and a free-flexing unit. One of the upgrades for 2024 is the use of the Xcell 12 binding on a new plate system. This is a definite update from the TPX 12 system we had on the 2023 version, even though that was just fine.

At 76 mm underfoot, this ski has a lot of grip and torsional stiffness but stays somewhat wider for a better balance point. Skis that are super-narrow underfoot certainly get better edge hold, but they’re also a lot harder to use and to stand on. The wider body of the R15 is way simpler and requires less work. Do we lose out on some of that top end performance? Sure, but that’s what the WRC and HRC series of skis are for—this one is more in line with what most skiers are doing out there on the hill. The ski is fully cambered, so it has a long effective edge and a smooth overall feel. In the 174, it hits 15-meters in the arc, great for mixing both longer and shorter turns.

When used by advanced and expert skiers, a lot of opportunities start to come to life. We not only love how the ski performs in an on-trail format, but also how it is so incredibly useful to skiers that spend most of their time in a carved turn and firmly trenched in with all edges. While more experienced skiers will get the most out of these skis, specifically, it brings to light the fact that almost everyone should have a front side ski for a great majority of the ski season.
