DESCRIPTION

Rossignol built the XP 12 for the Xplore system, a backcountry nordic standard meant to bring more control to off-track skiing than traditional touring gear allows. The boot is substantial. A strengthened internal heel counter and external lateral reinforcement give it real torsional stiffness, while a Cordura shell handles abrasion, and a central zipper over a double speed lace lock closes the whole thing quickly and seals out snow. Freshly updated with a softer internal heel and a revised fit, it's aimed at skiers who want backcountry nordic terrain to feel controlled rather than merely survived.

Why we like it:

The external lateral reinforcement does the heavy lifting here, supplying the sideways stiffness needed to steer a wide ski without piling on the weight of a full plastic cuff. The central zipper over the lace lock is the other detail worth calling out, because one pull seals the entire boot against snow.

Who it's for:

Intermediate through advancing skiers running an Xplore setup for backcountry nordic touring. The Comfort Fit shape carries moderate to generous volume, suiting average feet and leaving space for a proper winter sock on cold days. It's built for skiers covering ground on ungroomed terrain who want a boot that supports a turn as readily as it supports a stride.

Highlights:

The Xplore sole is the whole reason this boot exists. It's a newer backcountry nordic standard that moves the pivot point further forward than traditional systems and adds a stiffer connection, which translates to noticeably more control when you're steering a wide ski downhill. None of that works unless the boot itself resists twisting, which is where the strengthened internal heel counter and the external lateral reinforcement earn their keep, together keeping the boot from folding when a wide ski goes on edge. The upper uses a Cordura cover for abrasion resistance with a lining behind it for warmth. Closure runs through a double speed lace lock, then a central zipper and velcro strap over the top to seal everything down. Rossignol revised the internal heel for this season, softening it, and refined the overall fit.

Things to consider:

The Xplore sole works only with Xplore bindings, so this boot commits you to that system completely; it will not fit NNN, Turnamic, or Rottefella BC. It's heavy by nordic standards, which is the trade for the support it delivers. Skiers wanting a lighter, less structured option on the same system should look at the XP 5 below it in the line.

Fit & sizing considerations:

Rossignol lists this on a Comfort Fit shape with moderate volume and room for a heavier sock. Size close to your normal shoe size while accounting for the thicker sock you'll wear in backcountry conditions. Rossignol updated the internal heel and the general fit for this model year, so if you tried a previous version and found the heel harsh, it's worth trying again.
