2024 Blizzard Black Pearl 88 Women's Skis

2024 BLIZZARD BLACK PEARL 88 WOMEN'S SKIS

$699.95

Well, this one is about as clean-cut and well-rounded as they come. The 2024 Blizzard Black Pearl 88 is as much of a benchmark ski in the industry as anything else out there. It finished quite high in our “Most Influential Skis of the Past 20 Years” bracket this past March, and for good reason. This has been one of the best-selling skis of all time, leaving thousands of happy skiers in her wake. As a result of the build, shape, and profile, these amazing all-mountain skis are about as versatile as they come, and since they attain that status at such a high level of performance, it makes the ski seem all the more amazing when it comes to approachability, versatility, and top-end performance. By hitting the biggest portion of the widest range of skier, the net cast from the Pearl 88 is absolutely massive. It wouldn’t be effective if the ski wasn’t good, though, so it’s a good thing that they make a wonderful product.

The construction has gotten more sophisticated over the years, culminating with this season’s TrueBlend wood core. By mixing different wood stringers in different widths and lengths, Blizzard creates a unique and individualistic core that is tailored to the length as well as the type of ski. The Black Pearl 88 uses an All-Mountain version of the wood core, consisting of 7 beech stringers for density and power to go along with 3 wider poplar sections that provide a mix of light weight and high energy. The central strip of beech goes a long way in keeping the overall character of the ski smooth and composed while the three stringers along each side decrease in length the closer they get to the edge to make the ski more accessible while maintaining grip. We also get a full width titanal laminate underfoot, extending ever so slightly into the ski and this provides excellent edge control while reducing vibrations and keeping the ski sturdy and strong. In the 159, the Pearl tips the scale at 1630 grams per ski—light enough for maneuverability and burly enough for high-performance stability.

When it comes to the shape and profile of the ski, the Black Pearl 88 borders on traditional. There’s no drama here—just some normal and basic rocker in the tips and tails. The tails, though, are considerably flatter than a lot of other skis in this realm, making it one of the more directionally-oriented skis out there today. In addition, that flat tail keeps the ski tracking straight and true through crud, chop, and other manky snow profiles. While there’s some tip rocker, it’s mainly more abrupt at the end to create the splay. This keeps the effective edge on the long side and the ski on the smooth side. By generating a 13-meter turn radius in the 159, the Black Pearl 88 is a crisp and eager carver—one that loves to be driven across the fall line with purpose and intent. There’s not a lot of taper here, either, again following the more traditional shaping and profiling principles of all-mountain skis.

While the Black Pearl 88 has been around for a while now, it never ceases to amaze us just how many skiers absolutely love this thing. It certainly falls into the category that we like to call: “If you have gone through all the information out there and still don’t know what to get, get this one.” It’s that well-rounded of a ski—total and complete confidence and control on one hand, and then a ton of playfulness and agility on the other. For advanced skiers mostly, the Pearl 88 has one of the broadest reaches out there.
