Storm days and deep snow are what the Head Oblivion 116 was built for, but it never loses the playful streak of a freestyle ski. This wide, full twin tip powder ski combines a poplar wood core with carbon and fiberglass layers and a rockered tip and tail. It floats easily, slashes and smears on command, and stays stable enough to open it up in big terrain.
Why we like it:
Head built this as Cole Richardson's ski, and it shows: it's wide enough for serious powder yet light and balanced enough to spin and ski switch. The ISS damping layer over the edges also takes the edge off chatter when the soft snow gets tracked out.
Who it's for:
Advanced intermediate and advanced skiers who chase fresh snow and like to treat the whole mountain as a playground. It's ideal as the wide ski in a two-ski quiver, or as a daily driver for skiers in snowy regions who mostly chase powder, trees and big lines.
Highlights:
The shape tells the story first. In the 181cm length the Oblivion 116 is 141-116-131 with a long 27.8 meter radius that favors big, open turns and smooth slarves over tight carving. Head's TNT rocker splits the profile roughly half rocker and half camber, with lift in both the tip and tail for float and a full twin shape that lands switch without hooking. Inside is a poplar wood core with vertical stringers made from recycled PET, which keeps weight in check while adding some pop. Mono and biaxial carbon layers and diagonal fiberglass tune the flex and torsional stiffness. ISS (Independent Suspension System) places elastomer dampers over the edges, in the tip, tail and underfoot, to absorb vibration when the snow gets choppy. Tuff Wall vertical sidewalls protect the ski from impact, and the sintered UHM C base is fast and durable. Each ski weighs roughly 2000 grams at 181cm.
Things to consider:
A 116mm waist and long radius make this a soft-snow specialist, so it feels slow edge to edge and less precise on firm groomers. It only comes in two long lengths, so shorter or lighter skiers may find it too much ski.
Fit & sizing considerations:
The Oblivion 116 sizes short thanks to its generous rocker and twin tip. Most skiers can choose a length at or slightly above their usual size; go longer for more float and stability in big terrain.
