An entry-level junior race boot designed for young athletes stepping into their first real race-fit boot. With a soft 65 flex, the JR Racing last, and the same race-balance geometry as the higher-end Raptor line, it gives developing skiers a taste of what a proper race boot feels like without overwhelming them on flex.

Why we like it:

The Junior Flex Tuning is a really nice feature on an entry-level race boot. It gives a 65 setting for everyday training and a softer 55 setting for early-season or cold days when the boot is harder to drive. Pretty rare to see flex tuning on a boot at this price point in the line.

Developing junior racers, advanced intermediate young skiers, and any kid who is ready to leave system boots behind and get into a real race-fit shell.

Highlights:

The Raptor 65 is HEAD's gateway into the Raptor race line for younger skiers. It's built on the JR Racing last with an SL-style shell, so the fit is properly snug and race-oriented; not a recreational kid boot at all. The Junior Team liner with a self-shaping footbed gives a clean wrap around the foot without needing a bootfitter session for most kids. Four micro-adjustable alloy buckles with low-profile heads keep things simple and reliable, and the 30mm Velcro power strap is sized appropriately for smaller calves. Race balance geometry and an aggressive forward lean encourage proper stance, which is exactly what you want a young racer to be learning. The Junior Flex Tuning lets the boot soften to 55 for lighter or beginning racers, then stiffen back to 65 as the skier progresses, which extends the useful life of the boot considerably.

Things to consider:

This is a real race-fit boot, so it's not the right pick for kids who are just looking for a comfortable resort boot. The narrow JR Racing last won't work for higher-volume kid feet, in which case the WCR PV junior boots are a better path.
