Stepping off the groomers doesn't have to be intimidating, and the K2 Mindbender 85 is the entry point into K2's freeride-leaning Mindbender family. A lightweight wood core, a forgiving flex, and an all-terrain rocker shape make it intuitive to turn and steady when snow conditions turn mixed. Intermediates ready to explore get a ski that stays calm in exactly the conditions that used to feel like a problem. We chose to pair the Mindbender 85 with the Cabrio 100 MV because it's a nice, comfortable boot that provides a bit more performance than your average entry level boot. Thanks to the unique three-piece cabrio design, the boot flexes off the tongue for a more progressive feel that is both intuitive and smooth, giving developing skiers enough leverage to bend their skis, but not so much that the boot feels overly demanding.
Who it's for:
Intermediates ready to explore past the groomed run. It's the entry point to K2's freeride-leaning Mindbender family, aimed at skiers stepping into mixed terrain for the first time.
Things to consider:
As the accessible ski in the Mindbender family, it will feel soft to a strong skier pushing hard through heavy snow. The lighter build also gives up damping at speed compared with a metal-laminate freeride ski.
Fit & sizing considerations:
Freeride-leaning skis reward a bit of length for stability in variable snow, so sizing at or slightly above your height works well. Skiers who spend most of their time in trees should stay closer to their height for easier pivoting. Dalbello lists this one at a 101mm last, putting it in medium-volume territory with a slightly more generous instep than the number alone suggests, since the hinged tongue opens wide. Broad forefeet generally get on well here, while low-volume feet may find it roomy.
