DESCRIPTION

An 88mm waist isn't quite a frontside ski and isn't quite an all-mountain ski; it's the in-between width that lets you carve like you mean it but still drop into trees when the urge hits. The Mindbender 88 takes that sweet-spot waist and pairs it with K2's new Dark Matter construction, putting it at the carving end of the redesigned Mindbender freeride lineup for 2027.

Why we like it:

K2 tunes the Dark Matter weights differently for each ski in the new line, and on the 88 they're pushed toward the tips and tails. That positioning sharpens turn initiation and adds bite at the end of the turn, which is exactly what you want from a ski meant to carve. The result is a ski that hooks up earlier and tracks more confidently than its weight would suggest.

Who it's for:

Carvers in the advanced-to-expert range who want a ski with frontside credentials but enough waist to handle the occasional foray into softer snow or trees. Skiers stepping up from a pure carving ski to something more versatile will find this an easy transition.

Highlights:

The 88's edge-amplifying personality comes from a few coordinated design choices. Dark Matter weights at the tip and tail edges are the headline; they make the ski engage early and track confidently. The Aspen Paulownia core keeps things light and energetic, and Titanal I-Beam down the center of the ski adds damping without the dead-weight feel of full sheets. Compared to the wider Mindbenders, the 88 has a more directional shape with a flatter, more traditional tail that locks into carved turns. A relatively short turn radius pairs with the All Terrain Rocker profile to make the ski feel agile and quick edge-to-edge. Like the rest of the new Mindbender line, the 88 runs a sintered base.

Things to consider:

Float is not this ski's strength. If you regularly chase soft snow, step up to the 96 or wider. The metal-laminate construction is also more demanding than the no-titanal Mindbender 90; intermediates who want a friendlier ski should start there.

Fit & sizing considerations:

True to length. Drop a size if you want shorter, snappier carves; otherwise stick with what you usually ride.
