For kids stepping into slalom, the Energiapura Junior Shinguards make gate contact far less intimidating. These lightweight plastic shin guards are sized for younger racers and shaped like the carbon guards on the World Cup, with adjustable straps parents can snug down at the hill. Kids can focus on their turns instead of worrying about the next pole.

Why we like it:

They look like the real deal. The junior guard carries the same World Cup shape older racers use, which goes a long way with a nine-year-old heading into their first race.

Features and Functions:

Adjustable elastic straps with Velcro closures are the first thing parents will like, since they cinch down on thin calves and adjust as kids grow or switch between race suit and training pants. The guard itself is molded plastic, light enough that young racers won't feel weighed down, in the shape of Energiapura's World Cup CDM carbon guard so poles slide off instead of catching. They are certified as protective gear, which is reassuring for parents buying a first set.

Fit and Sizing:

More than one junior length is offered, so you can match the guard to your racer's lower leg, and the straps tighten for a secure hold.

Bottom Line:

The first shin guard most young slalom racers need, and a solid pick for club and U12 to U14 programs.
