While the strap locks securely into the grip, it also will release if under significant load, so if you happen to hook your pole on a tree or something like that, the strap will release from the grip so you don’t injure your shoulder, arm, or wrist. In the event of a release, all you need to do is press the strap back into place and it clicks and locks again.
