For the ultimate in freeride flotation, check out the 2022 Blizzard Spur. This ski has gone through some changes over the years, but it remains the widest ski in Blizzard’s line, and the one best-suited for the deepest snow on the planet. You’re likely not going to be using this as your every-day ski, and that’s okay, but if you live in a place where this is your daily driver, please let us know where it is and we’ll be there shortly. One of the cooler things about the 2022 Spur is that it’s available in a variety of lengths, ranging from 159 to 189, breaking on the 10’s. Normally, skis this wide aren’t found in lengths that short, so it really opens up a new demographic as far as shorter powder skis are concerned. If you have been looking for a smaller powder ski to add to your quiver, the Spur is one of the best, and only, choices around.

CORE MATERIALS

PREFERRED TERRAIN
Powder, Big Mountain, Touring
Built with a sandwich sidewall construction, the Spur has a lot of power, but a surprising amount of flex as well. This is what you’re looking for from a powder ski, as it needs to bend and flex with the snow around it to create a smooth and stable ride. Carbon Flipcore technology takes this ski to the next level by including the carbon frame in the tips and tails, as well as the carbon fiberglass compound laminates that are found on either side of the multi-layer wood core. It’s got more of a directional shape, even versus the Rustler series, so they do prefer to charge pretty hard when it comes to a variety of terrain.
At 127 mm underfoot in the 179 cm length, these skis have a pretty straight cut to go along with the shape. The 24.5-meter turn radius in the 179 is on the straight side for sure, since when you’re dipping into snow that’s two feet deep, the ski will bend and create more sidecut, so it’s better and more fun/playful to have that longer arc. You don’t want your powder skis to be hooky or grabby, rather, they should be smooth and playful to allow for smearing and slarving and skidded turns in the deep stuff. It’s just more fun that way, and it allows for higher speed skiing and straighter, more aggressive lines on some of the biggest mountains that you can find.
When you get to the top of said mountain, you’ll be pretty darn stoked that you have a Spur on your feet. While not the everyday ski for the everyday skier, it’s certainly got the goods to be one of the best and most dominant one-dimensional skis out there. For heli skiers, cat skiers, and those who are just darn good at finding the deepest snow on the planet, there’s a lot to like about the 2022 Blizzard Spur.
