2026 Volkl Peregrine 82 On Snow Ski Review

DECEMBER 10, 2025 | WRITTEN BY Bob St.Pierre, Jeff Neagle, and Matt Stromecki

The 2026 Volkl Peregrine 82 is just so Volkl. While the Mantras of the world will continue to get top billing from a sales, marketing, and brand driving perspective, we’d be willing to bet that the engineers really like the way the Peregrine 82 tells a story. Skis in this range are incredibly well-rounded from a resort use standpoint, and will satisfy the needs and wants of many front-side oriented skiers who want some versatility to make their ski day more interesting. Whether you’re heading into the trees or bumps, these Peregrine 82’s can handle adversity, just so long as you have a decent skill set to match. They deal with light snow reasonably well, but if it gets heavy, wet, or deep, the 82 can’t quite compete with wider all-mountain skis.

Built with a multi-layer wood core consisting of poplar and beech, the skis use two sheets of metal, with the upper laminate as a tailored titanal frame. What’s interesting about the use of wood is that Volkl puts the beech along the sides to go under the metal, doubling down on the emphasis on precision and carving performance. With two sheets of metal added to the mix, the ski gets pretty stiff and responsive. Thanks to the square-shaped tail, the edge grip follows you all the way to the end of the turn. This is amplified by the implementation of Volkl’s 3D Radius Sidecut, which can make various turn shapes and styles feel a lot more natural and fluid—even within a singular turn, it’s simple to go between short turn crispness and long turn stability.

Bob's Take:

This ski is more of an on-trail carver even though it certainly has the width to be used in more adventurous situations. The simple fact that the carving capacity of the ski is so high basically makes you forget that it’s actually well-rounded. The caveat here is that it’s really only versatile on the feet of more skilled and technical skiers. I love feeling the pull of the ski into the turn, allowing you to build pressure throughout the arc, finishing with a ton of energy and rebound through the tail. It’s very predictable and secure in that carved turn. Between the 177 and the 182, the 177 just amplifies that pull while the 182 is a bit slower on the initiation. When you’re in the turn, the 182 performs and feels like it’s a bit shorter. not too short to even make note, but when skiing back to back with the 177, it’s at least worth mentioning.

While it’s a bit stiff in the bumps, it still works great, as long as you’re more of an “around the mogul” type of bump skier rather than a zipper-line charger. In the trees, it’s better if the snow is packed, but they can still maneuver pretty well due to the flatter overall profile. When the snow is soft, that profile puts it in more of a smeary character than many other cambered 82’s, but it’s still going to want to turn and carve more than slash and drift. It’s safe to say that most people will enjoy this ski in an on-piste format rather than off-piste as it is a pretty advanced ski.

Matt's Experience:

Right away I was reminded why I chose this ski as my Ski Bum race ski. It has power, precision, stability, predictability, and grip. There’s a lot of power and energy going on here, you have to be ready for it. If you aren’t engaged or deep into the front of your boots, the Peregrine 82 will certainly let you know and punish you for your lack of attentiveness. This is not necessarily a negative as that is part of the engaging attribute these skis have. In terms of carving performance, top-notch. There’s just the right amount of precision to really pull you into a turn but not too much to where they are unwieldy in more variable ungroomed snow if you are skilled. Once you are in the turn, you can feel the torsional stiffness latch onto the snow and then the ski loads up right at the apex. At the end of the turn, that energy releases in full making for a very rewarding end of the turn. In terms of turn shape, you really can make wide variety due to the 3D Radius when loading the ski at different sections, slope gradients, and speeds.

When skied on ungroomed terrain, you need to be very balanced and in the front of your boots at all times. These skis want to be pointed down the fall line and desire to get up to speed as soon as possible, so if you don’t reign them in, they will become the pilot. Thankfully, the flatter profile does allow for some smeariness. If this ski was more cambered, it would be extremely difficult in anything ungroomed. This flatter profile doesn’t take away from its on trail performance but rather adds to its versatility for more advanced and expert skiers. Overall, this thing rips and I did not find its limit. You can push them hard and not many skiers will find their limit unless in an actual race scenario where a full race build will be more applicable.

Jeff's Reaction:

The Peregrine 82 is a nice mixture of precision and versatility, although it leans towards the precision side if we are to consider that a spectrum or range. It’s an interesting ski. A great ski, yes, but also interesting to me. For being 82 mm underfoot, it feels like it has the personality and some of the traits of narrower skis. It’s purely technical in its performance and any slight change in weighting or angulation results in the ski doing something different. It’s both a good thing and a bad thing depending on how you like to ski. For skiers with solid fundaments and strong technique who enjoy using those skills to manipulate their skis, it’ll be a blast. It is, on the other hand, kind of a lot of ski.

I was quickly reminded of that the first time I got a little bit in the backseat over the past couple days on the Peregrine 82. It doesn’t feel great when that happens, and it can be hard to get back in the driver’s seat and in control of the skis again. It’s not a bad thing, it’s just a reminder that these are truly skis designed for experts, or at least a high level advanced skier. They’re also quite stiff. Probably a bit stiffer than I want personally. The closest thing I own to a Peregrine 82 is the Stockli Montero AX, just a couple mm narrower, but that ski feels lighter and softer. Some skiers out there, realistically, a lot of skiers out there, will prefer the stiffness of the Peregrine 82 over a softer, more forgiving ski, but I think it’s important for skiers to understand its personality when considering it.

Again, if you have the right skillset, it’s a blast. The way you can change turn radii in a carve by weighting different portions of the ski to engage the 3D Radius shape is exceptionally rewarding. I love that aspect about it. If I owned a Peregrine 82, that’s pretty much all I would do on it: carve turns on groomers and play around with turn shapes. In our testing and conversations, Bob talked about how much he liked it as an off-piste ski in softer snow and bumps, which I think is great, but it doesn’t apply to me. It’s a similar concept as on-piste as you just have to stay 100% engaged with your weight forward and driving the ski where you want it to go. For better or for worse, I tend to not ski like that in soft snow situations. My preferences and experiences over the years have led me to having a looser style whenever I’m off a groomer, and the Peregrine 82 just isn’t really a ski that can be skied loosely. I had a really good time revisiting this ski. I think it’s fantastic and I think there are a lot of skiers out there who would absolutely love it. That said, if I’m shopping in this width range for myself and choosing out of Volkl’s lineup, chances are I’d choose the Mantra 84 as I personally prefer its all-mountain influence compared to the more frontisde oriented nature of the Peregrine.
