2027 K2 Mindbender 101 Ski Review - Lead Image

2027 K2 Mindbender 101 Ski Review

JUNE 4, 2026 | WRITTEN BY Bob St.Pierre

The K2 Mindbender lineup gets a big revamp for 2027, and the all-new 101 is at the forefront of the development when it comes to mixing all-mountain performance and freeride creativity. The Mindbender 101 is a perfect choice for advanced and expert skiers who are looking for a strong yet playful ski. Built with a sturdy wood core, two sheets of metal, and new damping technology, the Mindbender 101 pairs powerful construction with a looser shape and profile to mix firm snow composure and confidence with soft snow compliance.

It’s fair to say that the new Mindbender 101 replaces the outgoing Mindbender 99 Ti, but there’s definitely a different feel and character here. The 99 Ti always felt like a totally confident carver, no matter what the conditions or terrain. While it didn’t exactly float like a freeride ski, it could handle softer snow if needed. This new 101 is capable of being challenged in firmer snow conditions in a carved turn, but it’s considerably better at floating through deep snow. The construction is somewhat similar, but the new 101 does take a more balanced stab at creative freeride skiing. It’s built with a blend of aspen and paulownia—the paulownia adds energy and pop to the ski while the aspen contributes a quiter and smoother tone overall. We get one full sheet of metal below the core, and then on top of the core we get K2’s new use of Titanal I-Beam. We’ve seen I-Beam tech in the Disruption series, but this new shaping keeps more of a central strip in the spine, ending just around the rockered zones. On the outside of the skis, in the fore and aft sections, we get K2’s new use of Dark Matter Damping. Through experiments and research, K2 engineers determined that these points were the most conductive of chatter and basically placed this polymer material in those spots to reduce unwanted vibrations. Again, this was taken from Disruption, but in those more frontside oriented skis, the polymer was further towards the tips and tails. In a freeride or all-mountain ski, the bulk of the chatter happens more in the middle of the board, hence the strategic placement.

At 101 mm underfoot, this is a ski that can blur lines between all-mountain and freeride. We get measurements of 130/101/122 that creates a relatively long 20-meter turn radius in the 185 cm length. This ski feels like it can make a longer or a shorter arc, but the superpower here is that the profile allows for a much driftier and smearier performance than the build may let on. To compound that, the shape and style of the ski is a lot more freeride oriented in nature than the outgoing 99 Ti, so skiers looking for that same directional mentality may be thrown off by the 101’s more surfy character. By mixing that slarvy look with a strong build, K2 is pushing that versatility boundary and making the target realm of the ski wider overall. It’s not nearly as defined as some other skis in this range, especially the Mindbender 99 Ti. This looseness, paired with the solid feel, contributes largely to the soft snow proficiency. That 99’s shape was 134/99/120 in the 184, so this new ski is certainly a straighter cut. In addition, the taper shape is smoother and less bulbous than the 99’s, contributing to the more freeride-focused character.

2027 K2 Mindbender 101 Ski Review - Matt Carve Shot

Starting with on-trail performance, the first thing that stands out about this ski is its smoothness. The Dark Matter technology really works. When paired with the metal, the central spine of the ski is very comforting, but the sides of the ski feel firmly planted on the snow, even in firmer conditions. The ski has the build of an all-mountain carver, and it takes full advantage of that. The initiation is easy, mainly thanks to the rocker, but as you get it up on higher edge angles, the ski really starts to come alive. The stoutness allows you to stand on the edge and push it to its limits. So far, we’ve found few when it comes to carving, although I would say that the eagerness to start and finish a turn is in line with what you’d expect from a 101 mm underfoot ski with a 20-meter radius and gratuitously long tip and tail rocker. The central portion of the ski, between the stability points, is where most of the energy and power is found. If you want to shorten the turns, the ski has no issues here. It makes evenly skidded turns and likes to be pushed in shorter arcs. If you stay centered and unweighted on the ski, it feels slippery and slidey, but the moment you increase that angle, the ski finds another gear. It never really feels heavy, rather, the weight is appropriate for the amount of power and energy that you’re getting out of it.

2027 K2 Mindbender 101 Ski Review - Soft Snow Shot

Based on our previous experiences with the Mindbender 99 Ti, it’s fair to say that off-trail or deep powder expectations were on the low side. The reality couldn’t be further from the truth. As much fun as this ski is on a groomer, it’s infinitely more entertaining and engaging in deeper snow, trees, and off-piste zones. First and foremost, it cuts through crud and chop with ease. We loved the 99 for that, but this 101 is just easier and doesn’t feel like it’s trying to fight to get to the bottom as much. Whether it’s wind-packed snow, spring corn, or other multi-dimensional snow types, the 101 interacts appropriately. If it needs to dig in and carve, it will, but given the longer arc and the smoother taper, the ski also can stay on top and be more playful. This is effective in our tighter trees here in Vermont, as the ski can pivot easily and make quick work out of adverse and changing conditions within the woods. The best part, though, is the powder. We were very impressed at how this ski handled powder and deeper snow. This season we were fortunate to have a bunch of fantastic snow days, and we did take full advantage. One day in February, we had just returned from an industry day at Waterville Valley and had a truck full of skis to test. It snowed that night so the next morning was a full-on powder day. These 101’s just happened to be on the top of the pile, so I was somewhat disappointed that the Black Crows Atris or the Kastle Transcend 104 was on the bottom, but a 101 should be able to handle a foot of snow, so I didn’t dig—I grabbed the ski on top. And I was not disappointed in the least. The ski feels very cohesive and predictable in deep snow and it turns with relative ease. Skis with more of a traditional freeride and floaty feel kept creeping into my mind, like the Salomon QST 100 or the Blizzard Rustler 10, but I couldn’t help but shake the feeling that this ski kept right up with those stalwarts when it comes to powder and deeper snow. The added bonus with this ski, similar to the Rustler, is the ability of the ski to react appropriately to firmer or chunkier snow below the surface. While the QST 100 can get bounced around, and lighter freeride skis won’t handle the chop as well, these 101’s felt seamless and flawless when dealing with tribulation.

2027 K2 Mindbender 101 Ski Review - Freeride Shot

We think this ski fits better with the Mindbender collection, even if it takes a wider carver out of the lineup. Overall, we’re dealing with more of a freeride lean here, and that’s something that K2 didn’t really have outside of the Reckoner 102, and this is a different animal. With sizing ranging from 164 to a whopping 192, this ski will serve advanced and expert skiers of all sizes quite well. We skied the 185 mainly and found that it worked well enough for us with no real need to go bigger around here in Vermont. Perhaps in wider spaces and with deeper snow, the longer length would be fun, but if you’re dealing with tighter trees and more technical zones, the 185 felt like plenty. K2’s sharp new designs and more creative character within these skis should propel them into more of a forefront of the market. After a few years of relative stagnancy due to carryover construction, the 2027 K2 Mindbender 101 will hopefully catapult this brand back into favor of aggressive and fun-loving freeride skiers.
