The 2026 Black Crows Camox Freebird is a versatile touring ski with trustworthy and responsive performance no matter what you may encounter. Ready for any condition or terrain, the Camox Freebird is lightweight yet strong making it the perfect grab-and-go option for your backcountry missions. At 95 mm underfoot, a supremely versatile shape, and well balanced construction results in a fun and intuitive ride anywhere you may find yourself on snow.
Why we like it:
The balance between skiability and performance makes it one of the most versatile backcountry skis out there and its reactive intuitiveness puts it a step ahead of other skis in this category.
Who it's for:
Advanced to expert backcountry skiers who need a ski that has a bit more performance to it than a typical touring ski in this mid 90 mm underfoot backcountry category.
Highlights:
A lightweight paulownia woodcore keeps the weight down without sacrificing too much in the way of stiffness. Paulownia is not a dense wood so there is a good deal of suppleness to it but there certainly is a surprising amount of stiffness, both in a longitudinal sense and a torsional sense. Reinforcing the paulownia, the Camox Freebird also gets Fiberglass and Carbon Fiber stringers to boost the stiffness and energy of the ski without adding a lot of overall weight. A titanal laminate is also placed underfoot to reinforce the binding mount so that you do not lose a binding while deep in the backcountry. ABS sidewalls that taper to cap construction in the tips and tails bolster stiffness and edge grip underfoot while saving weight in the extremities.
Things to consider:
The Black Crows Camox Freebird is a touring specific ski and would not necessarily be the best option for resort use only. Soft snow is its ideal habitat with some firm, wind scorn, surfaces mixed in which is why it doesn’t love being in the resort.
