DESCRIPTION

Returning for 2027, the Black Crows Octo Birdie delivers a frontside-focused experience with a modern shape and playful personality. Inspired by the success of the Mirus Cor and UFO, the Octo Birdie tones things down just enough to make it more approachable for everyday resort skiers, while still maintaining a distinctive and dynamic character. With an 84 mm waist and short 14-meter turn radius, this is a fun, lively carving ski that's built for creative edgework and quick transitions.

Why we like it:

It’s hard not to enjoy a ski that makes carving feel this intuitive and fun. The Octo Birdie’s blend of precision and agility gives you just enough spice to explore different turn shapes without needing to push the pace all day.

Who it's for:

Ideal for intermediate to advanced women who prioritize carving and quickness on groomed snow. If you like to link short, clean turns but don’t want a ski that’s overly demanding, the Octo Birdie hits that sweet spot.

Highlights:

Built around a poplar wood core with fiberglass reinforcement, the Octo Birdie offers a smooth and responsive flex that feels balanced underfoot. A directional rocker profile in the tip and tail supports smooth edge engagement and release, while the semi-cap construction with ABS sidewalls delivers dependable edge grip on firmer snow.

Things to consider:

At 84 mm underfoot and with a lighter build, the Octo Birdie is most comfortable on groomers and in light mixed snow. Aggressive carvers will want to look elsewhere for something with a stiffer flex and metal for more vibration damping as well as edge grip on firm snow. Those venturing into deeper terrain will want something a bit burlier and wider.

Fit & sizing considerations:

Skis true to size. Choose your standard length for a balanced ride, or size down slightly for a more nimble, playful feel.

Did this length feel short, long, or just right? Would you recommend sizing up or down, or does it ski "true to size?" Would you choose this length for yourself?
Skied pretty true to its length, considering how short the turn radius I would probably choose this length for myself.

What's your first impression of this ski? How did it feel?
I had fun on these! They’re playful and quick edge to edge. They were much happier to snap quick slalom turns on the side of the trail than rail big GS arcs, but were very maneuverable in this style of skiing and had good pop out of every turn as long as you kept em short. Felt stable and gripped the ice fine, although didn’t feel as rock solid in terms of edge hold as something with more metal might. I took these down ungroomed funky Gondolier for my second run and they were great at handling the variable ice to dust conditions, didn’t ever feel like they got caught up or snagged in the fresh snow. Not a super chargy ski but knows how to dance.
For what type of terrain would you recommend this ski? Why does it perform well in that terrain?
Did fine on the groomers particularly with short radius turns where they were fun and poppy, I could see them really shining in fresh snow despite the narrower width or moguls where the short radius could potentially be a lot of fun.
What's the appropriate ability level and/or style for this ski? Why is it appropriate for that type of skier?
It’s a light and fun ski for most ability levels, approachable and easy to transition edge to edge without requiring much power.
Anything else you want to tell us about your experience on these skis?
The periwinkle color is sooo pretty, obsessed.
