Fans of the Elan Wildcat 86 C Black Edition will be psyched to welcome it back for the 2025 season, featuring the same great build and high-performance characteristics that provided a wide range of skiers access to its crisp turning, impressively smooth performance for all-mountain terrain. While the rest of the Wildcat family received a makeover, Elan carried forward the Black Edition formula and for good reason. We saw the success of the Wildcat 82C for its carbon-infused build and innovative shape and the Black Edition simply adds to it by increasing the width to take it to the wider-bodied side of the spectrum. This blends frontside capabilities with all-mountain versatility, allowing skiers the ability to carve with precision while leaving plenty of room for off-piste exploration.

Elan’s approach to their skis has continued to gain notoriety as it shines through in the exceptional performance, particularly in their frontside-focused line. In this case, the high-quality build matched with the Amphibio profile lends itself to the Wildcat 86 C Black Edition’s level of versatility as it performs just as well on-piste as it does off-piste. For construction, Elan uses a laminated wood core that provides a noticeable amount of energy and pop to it due to the fiberglass. Where we see the defining performance enhancer is with the Amphibio Truline Technology that places more emphasis on the inside edge. With right and left specific skis, additional material is placed over the inside portion of the ski, providing phenomenal edge grip while leaving the outside edge more forgiving. Furthering it even more, Elan uses a carbon reinforcement in this zone to further stiffen the flex of the ski and the precision of the carve. The level of energy and smoothness that is built in is incredible, especially given how lightweight it is. Strong and capable on most terrain, Tester Heidi Noonan found they skied best “carving, on steep terrain and hard pack.” A testament to its capabilities, it is designed for grip and stability without feeling overly demanding.
The Rocker / Camber / Rocker profile of the 2025 Elan Wildcat 86 C Black EditionLooking at the shape, the 86 mm waist width makes it on the wider side for a frontside ski but given the build, it excels in the carving capacity more than anything. For a daily driver, it’s hard to argue that this blend of characteristics doesn’t make the perfect everyday tool. With a wider footprint, progressing intermediates have a better balance point and can gain confidence carving while maintaining control. Looking at the overall dimensions, we get 127 mm in the shovel and 113 mm in the tail, giving plenty of energetic release out of a turn with flotation and maneuverability in the forebody. Considering the Amphibio profile, Elan uses both camber and rocker profiles, which gives the ski an incredibly intuitive feel. With longer camber on the inside edge and longer rocker on the outside edge, this aligns perfectly with the construction, allowing for smooth and energetic edge to edge maneuverability, as well as grip and power on the downhill edge. As for turn shapes, the 164 cm length generates a 14.7-meter turn radius which allows for clean carves across the fall line, as well as shorter, quicker turns.
The 2025 season welcomes back the Elan 86 C Black Edition with open arms, unchanged and versatile as ever. Since most of us spend the majority of our time on groomers, it only makes sense to reap the benefits of a frontside/all-mountain ski with a high-performance but impressively accessible nature. Blending frontside construction features with an all-mountain body proves to be the successful recipe for a wide array of skiers.
