When it comes to pro model skis, the Armada Kimbo 95 is truly one of a kind. Kim Boberg is the brainchild behind this wild ski, and while that can mean a lot of good things for a very few select skiers, it’s likely not going to gain universal appeal, for better or for worse. The Kimbo 95 follows a very strict regimen of shape, profile, mount point, and sizing that are very specific to Kim. This goes even down to the only size, a 182, that’s available. Basically, if you’re not a 182, you’re out of luck on this one.

There’s not a whole lot of interesting stuff when it comes to construction. Kimbo 95 is built with a poplar wood core and an AR 75 sidewall. Even the tips and tails aren’t fully sidewalled, so there’s some interesting flex potential here. While it does have a fully-wrapped edge and an aluminum tail insert, the rocker kind of eats up any tail hold that the ski may have on firmer snow. Armada states as weight of 1840 g/ski in the lone 182, so it’s on the light side for how aggressive and creative this ski has to be. The tip flex is the standout here, as the soft shovel allows for creativity and looseness in terms of turn initiation and groundwork tricks. Tester Landel Cochran notes that “The first thing I noticed when I threw a pair of Kimbos on my shoulder was how heavy the tail is. This ski is close to center-mounted and does indeed ski with long tails. The 15m radius helps bring the ski around quickly and it is designed with a good amount of flex. Not a particularly light ski but it does feel fairly solid. This is a ski with a pretty unique shape.”

Matt McGinnis has some nice feedback on this ski: “This ski was really interesting to “learn”. Off the bat, I expected a really playful park ski, possibly even buttery. But it’s not that. It’s also not a crazy frontside ski, despite its 15m turn radius. As such, I was a bit confused about what this ski was supposed to be. And then I took a run where I just laid into the short radius, and all of a sudden it started clicking. These skis would be incredibly fun for park layouts that embrace “swerve skiing”. Sugarbush for example would be fun. But the skis are stiff. So, they’d also love big jump features too. Then it hit me: these skis would be perfect at Kimbo Sessions. Which… makes sense. Given these are Kimbo’s skis. As such: that’s who these skis are perfect for. Kimbo, and Kimbo inspired skiers.”

I think the kimbo would be a great ski for a park skier who wants a unique snappy ski that can turn on a dime.

With a central mount point, a singular size, and a flexible shovel, these are some unique skis for sure. As with most/all pro models, there’s a grain of salt to be had here. Are you Kim Boberg? Do you aspire to ski with very similar qualities? Then go right for it. Are you just a fan but have your own style? Maybe something more traditional would suit you better.
