One of three new Mavericks for 2026, the 96 CTI earns big-time points for being versatile, reactive, manageable, and downright fun. The outgoing Maverick 95 Ti that it replaces was always an interesting ski, and for some, a great fit, but for others, not really what they were looking for. These Maverick skis have always had a unique mix of light weight, stiff flex, and reactive nature. While some of that harshness gets wiped away for 2026, the Maverick 96 CTI remains one of the most controllable skis in this width range out there, providing fun and exciting acceleration as well as a striking mix of grip and float.

While the outgoing 95 consisted of a light poplar core and two sheets of metal, we now get the new CTI build which focuses on blending ash and poplar with carbon and titanal. This isn’t a full dual-laminate titanal ski, as the ash takes the place when it comes to damping and power. Carbon stringers keep the pep and energy firmly intact while the metal underfoot allows for damp and predictable edge grip. In the 179, we’re getting a stated weight of 1900 grams, so right in the middle-zone of weight in this class. Not too heavy, nor too light. Tester Bob St.Pierre notes that “This is a true all-terrain ski. Great in bumps, trees, and groomers. The new tip shape is more amenable to floating in fresh snow while the tail is stiffer and flatter for solid grip and release and smooth cutting through choppy snow.” Again, not too stiff, nor too soft—this ski is all about balance and versatility.

The Rocker / Camber / Rocker profile of the 2026 Atomic Maverick 96 CTI

When it comes to shaping, the new 96 has a slightly wider tip and tail than the outgoing 95, resulting in a shorter turn radius. That, paired with a more tapered shovel, makes this ski more eager to turn, and a better performer in softer snow. Despite the ski’s added width, it’s still a very agile ski and makes a lot of sense when it comes to softer snow and tighter spaces. Alexander Connor states that the ski is “very good overall. Wide but not super wide. Balanced heavy snow with carving on the packed areas.” This blend is worth noting for sure, as the skis are able to vacillate between deep stuff and firm stuff with relative ease, especially in a directional format. The 96 CTI also has the same rocker profile except for a bit more tail rocker, making it slightly easier to release in the turns.

Very well balanced ski. Light but powerful. Playful but stable. They really did a great job with this one.

This new build and shape opens the Maverick 96 CTI to a larger and broader audience than ever before. Sure, you could look at it as a race to the middle, but that’s truly where the majority of the skiers are, and if you keep products off of their feet, you’re not going to have a very successful ski company. We don’t think the reduction in top end is a huge deal here, as many skiers never found the limits of the 95 Ti but liked about 95% of the ski. This makes it better for more skiers to have more fun in a variety of conditions and terrain.
