2027 Blizzard Thunderbird 82 LTD

The 2027 Blizzard Thunderbird R15 82 LTD is a burly front side ski that rips race-like turns through crud, chop, groomers, or anywhere else you can imagine. This new shape follows the same format as the R15 76 Thunderbird while sharing a platform with the Stormbird 82 DTI also from Blizzard. These wide-bodied carvers are now in their second year, returning unchanged from last. We love the stability and power, noting that there’s a lot to like about being properly supported by a strong and confident ski.

We see a similar build with all of the Thunderbird skis, lending race-like feel to a wider bodied format. . It is built with a blend of poplar and beech in the Trueblend Piste core construction style. With more beech stringers in the center of the ski, there’s a sturdier spine. With more poplar along the sides, the ski is at least somewhat accessible versus a more strenuous and stiff wood core that’s more reserved for the race crowd. This ski uses two full sheets of metal and active armor that keep the ski firmly planted to the snow. The hefty binding combined with the Pro level plate adds power, leverage, and damping to the mix, so if you’re looking to harness the full power of this build, the LTD is the way to go. Tester Kyle Phillips states that “The Thunderbird 82 LTD rips. I normally think Blizzards you have to stay on top of them or the ski runs away, but not this ski. It took what you put into it but didn’t demand more.”

The shape, at 82 mm underfoot, is getting pretty wide for a front side ski, so that adds to the power and pop that these LTD’s provide. With a 15-meter turn radius in the 175 cm length, the Thunderbird R15 82 LTD is built to handle short to mid-radius carves with ease. We also found that it’s sturdy enough to run fast and straight, so no issues with speed here. There’s just a slight amount of tip rocker here, but otherwise, these skis are sharp, angular, and precise in nature. Landel Cochran says “This is a stiff and heavy ski. It may not be a full-on race ski, but the construction and feel is race-adjacent. Two full sheets of metal offer tremendous vibration damping and stability. As typical for this type of build, it lacks liveliness at slow and medium speeds, but it feels blissfully bulletproof at blistering speed. This ski rewards excellent technique and strong legs. It requires critical edge angles and some muscle to get it to bend.”

It’s in an interesting spot, as it’s too wide to be considered purely frontside and it’s too narrow and stiff to be versatile. While some skiers may find issue with the width, stiffness, and heft from an all-mountain perspective, others, especially advanced and expert skiers with a good skillset, will love the instant power and gratification that these skis provide.
