What's your first impression of this ski? How did it feel?

This ski is very yellow. Lots of the rocker in the tip makes it so it will not fight you on your turns. Still holds an edge but it is not a dedicated carver.

For what type of terrain would you recommend this ski? Why does it perform well in that terrain?

All mountain. Soft bumps.

What's the appropriate ability level and/or style for this ski? Why is it appropriate for that type of skier?

Advanced to expert.

Anything else you want to tell us about your experience on these skis?

This is a great all mountain ski if you are not looking for a carver.

What's your first impression of this ski? How did it feel?

Matched my kit perfectly! In all seriousness it is a hard charging ski. Feels like planks on your feet.

For what type of terrain would you recommend this ski? Why does it perform well in that terrain?

These skis are all mountain chargers. Can do it all.

What's the appropriate ability level and/or style for this ski? Why is it appropriate for that type of skier?

This ski is better suited for those who are advanced skiers or above. They are a little to much for those that don't know how to work a ski.

Anything else you want to tell us about your experience on these skis?

These skis were what I expected from them, but they left me wanting a little bit more from them. The color was on point with my kit for sure.

This length feels a little long, it has a decent amount of rocker but has a long effective edge and the tails don’t want to release out of a turn as easily as I would’ve expected. I would probably feel better on the 180.

What's your first impression of this ski? How did it feel?

I wasn’t terribly impressed with the Ranger 96. The ski felt uninspired when compared to other mid 90 freeride oriented skis I’ve been on during the test. The ski felt long in the 187 length which was made worse by the tail of the ski feeling quite locked into each turn. I wanted the freedom to make looser and more playful turn shapes but I felt like the shape and tune of the ski was constantly fighting me. The ski wanted to go fast and make driven, locked in turns but didn’t feel as confident as other stronger carvers from the test. The Nordica Unleashed 106 for instance felt much more stable and confident on edge over the hard pack while being 10 mm wider under foot. The Ranger 96 isn’t a bad ski, I think the tune wasn’t up to par for the conditions and that other products I’d been on recently is outshining the Ranger.

For what type of terrain would you recommend this ski? Why does it perform well in that terrain?

This is tricky, it’s clearly an all mountain ski but it doesn’t feel exceptionally good at anything in particular. It carves okay, it pivots okay, it skis moguls and soft snow okay, it was decent rebound… it’s a perfectly average ski.

What's the appropriate ability level and/or style for this ski? Why is it appropriate for that type of skier?

It’s a perfect intermediate ski in my opinion. Beginners can push their progression with it but advanced skiers will likely find it lacking the special something that makes advanced skis interesting and great for specific conditions and terrain types.

Anything else you want to tell us about your experience on these skis?

It’s not a bad ski by any means but I was unimpressed and wasn’t looking to spend any more time skiing the Ranger 96 than I had to.

What's your first impression of this ski? How did it feel?

The bummer of this late season, very cold March, day is that I would want to ski this on soft snow. I think that’s where this ski would shine. When there was softer snow, it was really fun but can’t say this was the most fun on the hard ice.

For what type of terrain would you recommend this ski? Why does it perform well in that terrain?

Soft snow, powder, this would be a superb west coast ski. Light and on the wider end make this better suited for those days.

What's the appropriate ability level and/or style for this ski? Why is it appropriate for that type of skier?

Intermediate/advanced so they can handle the width and lesser side cut.

Anything else you want to tell us about your experience on these skis?

I bet this ski rips some pow.

I love trying to make the most of the slopes, making lots of GS turns when the conditions are there, or milking it on the edges of the trails if need be. I hit every side hit I can and will usually end my runs in the park, working on basic tricks, nothing too fancy. I do a little bit of everything, but I like a ski that is stable when carving at speed, while still playful enough to take in the woods (tip+tail rocker with some camber))

187 felt great! I would recommend sizing up if you are a more aggressive skier, but I have skied on the 180 as well and it still was pretty fun. The 187 was more stable at higher speeds when carving, so I really enjoyed it on-piste.

What's your first impression of this ski? How did it feel?

Was a little concerned I chose too long a length at first, but once I got going, it was great! The Rangers were pretty easy to get on edge, and I felt great while in the belly of my turns. The partial metal construction keeps the ski light, and I felt like they were still pretty playful and easy to get in the air.

For what type of terrain would you recommend this ski? Why does it perform well in that terrain?

Swiss army knife; this ski can do it all! I had a great time ripping groomers on it, but it did well going off side-hits and in the remnants of bumps that I was able to find.

What's the appropriate ability level and/or style for this ski? Why is it appropriate for that type of skier?

Intermediate skiers would enjoy this ski. The more energy I put into this ski, the better it felt, given that I think this would be a good choice for someone who is looking to progress in their skiing, whether that is through carving, woods, or bumps.

Anything else you want to tell us about your experience on these skis?

Topsheets are super yellow! I'm all about it, personally, but be forewarned... :)

What's your first impression of this ski? How did it feel?

These were smooth like buttah and flowed really nicely from turn to turn. Not a very demanding ski, not a ton of energy return, overall not like super fun and playful, but happy to go with the flow and facilitate whatever it was that you wanted them to do. Very agreeable as opposed to aggressive.

For what type of terrain would you recommend this ski? Why does it perform well in that terrain?

Could see this as a great all-rounder, easy to cruise on groomers, probably nice to slide around in moguls and trees as well.

What's the appropriate ability level and/or style for this ski? Why is it appropriate for that type of skier?

This is a great all mountain ski for intermediates or advanced skiers with a more relaxed style who aren’t interested in charging or working too hard, that can still do it all when it’s asked to.

The Fischer Ranger 96s are super floaty, easy to pivot, and just happy cruising wherever you point it.

Take the Fisher Rangers 96s anywhere. If you had to pick one pair of skis you won't be dissapointed with these.

What's the appropriate ability level and/or style for this ski? Why is it appropriate for that type of skier?

The Fisher Ranger 96s would work well for advanced skiers and also a skier ready to take the leap from intermediate to advanced.

These skis were smooth and confident. I love the mango color with the purple accent. These skis would be great for days when you want to flow through the mountain, not fight it. Just set the cruise control and enjoy the ride.

What's your first impression of this ski? How did it feel?

This ski is one of the most well-rounded skis on the market today. It really does everything slightly above average. Do not mistake a scoring chart of all 6's as a bad one--it's actually a very capable ski, just nothing really stands out.

For what type of terrain would you recommend this ski? Why does it perform well in that terrain?

The Ranger 96 is a true all-mountain ski designed for any and all conditions and terrain. The whole point here is that you don't have to think about it at all--the ski is basically on auto-pilot and will take you where you point the things.

What's the appropriate ability level and/or style for this ski? Why is it appropriate for that type of skier?

This ski can serve an intermediate as well as it can serve an expert. I don't think it's overly demanding, but there are certainly some accomplished skiers out there who will absolutely love the ski's versatility and power level.

Anything else you want to tell us about your experience on these skis?

There's nothing offensive or excellent about the Ranger 96.

For what type of terrain would you recommend this ski? Why does it perform well in that terrain?

Performs well in all mountain terrain. Potentially not well suited for icy groomers on the east coast.

Great ski for softer conditions. It felt light and easy to maneuver and was easy to turn. Tip was forgiving.

For what type of terrain would you recommend this ski? Why does it perform well in that terrain?

Great for powder and softer groomers. It’s has a lighter, playful, feel and performs great all over the mountain. Moguls, surfy sides, powder and groomer track.

What's the appropriate ability level and/or style for this ski? Why is it appropriate for that type of skier?

Beginner, intermediate to advanced. It’s light enough for a beginner to handle and enjoy groomers but once you advance you can really ski it in so many conditions and varied terrain.

If you could change anything about these skis, what would you change and why?

I like it just the way it is. I was skiing in more firm spring conditions and it performed well but if the tip was a little stiffer it would have helped me plow away some of the firmer sugar spring snow conditions.

Overall Impression

Similarly to the other Rangers the 96 felt overly damp and non-reactive in turns. You can push and push on this ski and you won't get much push back, which I could see being a positive for some skiers, but for me it was the opposite of how I like to ski. While still stable on edge I personally prefer a ski with more feedback and spring to it.

Appropriate Terrain

This is a pretty do it all ski if it matches your skiing style. Deeper snow may be an issue but it would need to be very deep to really be a problem. Its good at most things but great at anything in particular.

Appropriate Skier

intermediate and advanced skiers are going to get the most out of this ski with advanced skiers being more likely to hit the limits of this ski.

Other Thoughts

Like the other rangers I would bring back the carbon tip and make them more springy.

Overall Impression

I have always enjoyed and appreciated this ski. It's one of those skis that doesn't rise to the top in any singular criteria or isn't the best at a particular application, it's the sum of its parts that makes it good. It's strong enough on a groomer for me that I can push it as hard as I want, yet it has some suppleness and ease of use that I appreciate. Tip flex is pretty soft, so it engages easily. A heavier skier might push through it, but for me it's fantastic. Good off trail too. Not as agile or maneuverable as some, but certainly not punishing in a bump line.

Appropriate Terrain

It's a true all-mountain ski. From groomers to trees and even throw in some soft snow, it can do just about anything. Of course it'll get bogged down in really deep snow, but 6-8 inches would be a lot of fun on the Ranger 96.

Appropriate Skier

It's approachable for an intermediate, but can satisfy an expert too. Just based on what I've heard from bigger skiers, I do think there's a limitation for heavier, strong experts who like to ski super fast. So, if you're 200 lbs or bigger and you ski really straight, you might want something stiffer, but that feels like a pretty small number of skiers overall.

Other Thoughts

It's great how it is and offers a nice moderate option for lots of skiers. The market needs skis like this, so I wouldn't change a thing.
