DESCRIPTION

The Volkl Mantra 102 is the widest of the Mantra all-mountain freeride family, a ski that floats over soft snow yet keeps the edge grip and power the Mantra name is known for. A poplar and beech wood core, titanal layering, and a multi-radius shape give it a confident, do-everything personality that leans toward the freeride end of the spectrum.

Why we like it:

It's impressive how much grip a ski this wide holds on firm snow, the titanal construction keeps it from feeling vague or floppy off the groomers. The 3D Radius shape also makes it surprisingly willing to come around for its size.

Who it's for:

Advanced and expert skiers who want one ski for soft snow, variable conditions, and the occasional firm-snow carve. Best for strong skiers who like to ski the whole mountain at a confident pace.

Highlights:

At its core the Mantra 102 uses a multi-layer poplar and beech wood core, with beech toward the edges for power and poplar through the middle for flex and articulation. Titanal layering damps vibration and provides the grip that lets this wide ski hold an edge far better than its waist suggests. The 3D Radius sidecut blends a long tip radius for stability, a short center radius for maneuverability, and an open tail for a clean release, while the rocker profile and width handle float in soft snow. It's a genuine one-quiver freeride ski for skiers who refuse to slow down when conditions get variable.

Things to consider:

At its width, the Mantra 102 will never feel as crisp on hard snow as the narrower Mantras, and it asks for a strong skier to get the most from its stiffness. Skiers chasing a pure carving feel should look to a tighter-waisted option in the family.

Fit & sizing considerations:

Sizes true to length. Pick your usual size, or size up for extra float and stability in deep snow.

This ski felt like it could do it all, nice carve-ability and at 102 in the waist.

A bit more rigid than I used to be but still trying to be dynamic, smooth, and fluid with varying degrees of success. Skis on the snow, these days.

Did this length feel short, long, or just right? Would you recommend sizing up or down, or does it ski "true to size?" Would you choose this length for yourself?
It feels just right. Looks short but feels great.

What's your first impression of this ski? How did it feel?
First impression is Holy Cow. This ski rips turns like no other 102 out there. It's kinda silly actually how well this ski carves and how little it cares what's underneath it. This ski just motors.
For what type of terrain would you recommend this ski? Why does it perform well in that terrain?
While we'd normally expect a 102 to be versatile and amenable to more adventurous skiing, the Mantra 102 is really more at home on-trail. It does great in crud, chop, and broken snow, but if you get it in powder, bumps, or trees, it's a bit more of a challenge due to the stiffness and weight.
What's the appropriate ability level and/or style for this ski? Why is it appropriate for that type of skier?
This is an expert level ski. I don't think intermediates and even some advanced skiers would have a whole lot of success here. They'd go fast, for sure, but maybe they won't get the most out of the experience.
Anything else you want to tell us about your experience on these skis?
I've also skied this 102 in the 184 and it was fun for about 10 turns and then I was all done.
