We’ve loved the Blizzard Thunderbird R15 WB since its inception, and we haven’t stopped since. For 2025, the skis get a beefier binding plate and an updated graphic, but the ski has structurally returned unchanged. This is good news for us, as well as skiers that love the feeling of a purely carved turn but in a wider bodied front side format. At 76 mm underfoot, this ski is still what we’d consider to be narrow, but when pitted against its more race-like brethren, it’s still pretty wide. A lot of skiers simply enjoy the more balanced stand point and platform, and it’s as simple as that. If you’re looking for a narrower ski to round out a quiver for dedicated groomer days, this is a fantastic option, and we’ve noted that most days here in Vermont would be well spent on a Thunderbird R15.

Blizzard’s use of TrueBlend Piste wood core works great here, blending stringers of beech and poplar. The beech is longer in the central chord of the ski providing true tip to tail stability. As you get closer to the sides, the poplar becomes more popular, adding a slightly more forgiving flex and a lighter feel. This is a very sophisticated way of building a ski and it totally comes through on the snow. Blizzard then adds two layers of titanal to the ski for power and smoothness. This ski feels rock-solid on a variety of conditions and terrain. Tester Matt Stromecki notes that the Thunderbird R15 is an ”Incredible carving ski for someone who is looking for an intuitive and approachable frontside ski that is also needing a fairly high-performance ceiling. Very quick from edge to edge, tons of edge grip, and lots of energy at the end of the turn.” Skis of this build and shape to make a lot of sense for people looking for strong carving and a bit of approachability. Another construction technique they use is the Active Carbon Armor that provides a downward pressure in front of and behind the binding zone for pure edge grip and confidence.

The Rocker / Camber / Rocker profile of the 2025 Blizzard Thunderbird R15 WB

Carving skis that are 76 mm wide are very interesting. Purists will say they’re too wide. Skiers used to an 88 mm underfoot all-mountain ski will find them quite narrow. This is what makes them so darn appealing—they really make a lot of sense for a lot of advanced and expert skiers. The 174 produces a 15-meter turn radius, and for the most part, the ski likes to stick to that arc. Bob St.Pierre states that “the shape of the Thunderbird is so incredibly underrated, especially for skiers who spend most of their time in a lower snow zone. In reality, about 75% of our days would be best served on a TBird R15. The need for a much wider ski just doesn’t exist most of the time around here. That said, I also really enjoy standing on the mid-fat frontside waist of this ski in a lot of different areas.” The ski does have the mix of firm front side and narrow all-mountain to help take skiers to the next level. There’s a slight rocker in the tips, about 2mm. It’s not a lot to help with flotation; it assists in turn initiation and ease of use.

Very quick from edge to edge, tons of edge grip, and lots of energy at the end of the turn.

Skiers should have a good skillset here. Intermediates will be put off a bit by the stiffness of the ski. Progressing advanced and expert skiers will fare the best, using this ski as a high-end recreational option for most groomer days. If it doesn’t snow, then go right ahead and reach for this ski—just playing the numbers, it’ll be a great choice more often than not. The 2025 Blizzard Thunderbird R15 WB is the ideal choice for front side enthusiasts who are looking for a mix of stability, power, edge grip, and usefulness.

Thoughts
Groomers only, packed powder and firm snow. Torsionally stiff and reactive making it awesome for early morning groomers.
Nothing, this thing rocks!
