2025 Men's Wide Frontside Ski Comparison

The wide frontside category is a fun one because it basically plays the percentages. Most skiers, most of the time, are found on groomed terrain. These skis have various levels of pricing, performance, and styles for a huge range of skiers. We get skis that are based on full-on race room models, and then some that are the still the narrow versions of their wider and more playful freeride brethren. Unless you’re 100% sure that you’re going to be attacking the mountain on deep days and in crud and chop, your best bets are in this range, from 76 to 82 mm underfoot, with capabilities of true front side carvers mixed with the athletic ambitions of more all-mountain applications.

Overview:

For all of Volkl’s reputation of being precision-oriented skis with on-trail bias, it’s kind of wild how rockered their front side skis are. The Peregrine 76 keeps the same build and shape as the Deacon 76, with a flatter overall profile combined with slight tip and tail rocker. Other than the Dynastar skis that have more abundant tip taper and shape, the Peregrine skis are the most progressively rockered on this wall. With a lot of race heritage in the footprint and in the build, the Peregrine 76 is a very solid and sturdy ski with a slightly playful character. Another great benefit of the Peregrine 76 is the RMotion binding system—this worm screw style of attachment simply provides a better connection between the boot, binding, and ski. With an XCell/XComp toe and heel on top, you’re getting a lot of race-like performance here.

Who it's For:

Strong skiers with a race background will find the most to like here. You have had some formal training in the past and want a set of skis that will allow you to use it in the future.

2025 Stockli Montero AS Skis

Overview:

With crisp turning and smooth acceleration as priorities, the Stockli Montero AS is a short turn aficionado with silence and quietness written all over it. This ski returns unchanged for year 2, allowing skiers the ability and privilege to ride on this awesome carver. Built with a light wood core consisting of poplar and beech, the AS gets two full sheets of metal with all layers incorporated using a blend of rubber dust and epoxy. This keeps the ski as quiet as a mouse as you rip down the hill. It’s almost unnerving how silent these skis are as you really cannot feel a whole lot on your feet. In terms of g-forces and angulation, you can feel everything, but when it comes to vibrations and chatter, these Monteros are as smooth and capable as it gets. With a 76 mm underfoot width, the AS has a great blend of quickness and grip, allowing for off-piste activities but an on-trail preference.

2025 Blizzard Thunderbird R15 WB Skis

Overview:

Unchanged for 2025, the Blizzard Thunderbird R15 returns as one of our favorite wide frontside skis of all time. This ski is smooth, powerful, turns on a dime, and extremely rewarding. You can use this ski on so many days here in Vermont it’s almost not even fair. You don’t have to be a racer or former racer to appreciate the sharp and crisp turns, nor do you have to limit yourself to teeth-gritting carves—this Thunderbird is actually quite impressive at different speeds and in various turn shapes and styles. With two sheets of metal and a sophisticated wood core, the Thunderbird feels like a very comprehensive carver. At the same time, the ski is mobile enough to break free from the carves and make some shorter swing turns. While off-trail versatility isn’t so much of a strong suit, that’s okay given what most people are going to use this for, and that’s for pure on-trail performance and comfort.

Who it's For:

Strong skiers with a thirst for clean arcs. You want the performance of a race ski with a fraction of the effort.

2025 Dynastar M-Cross 78 Skis

Overview:

This ski is very overlooked in the upper 70’s range especially for progressing beginners and intermediates who are looking for a strong blend of value and sophistication. There aren’t many skis out there in this range that have the hybrid core technology, blending a light wood core in the central spine with polyurethane along the sides. With ample tip rocker for smoothing out adverse conditions, the M-Cross 78 shares a footprint with the wider M-Cross skis allowing it to be versatile, approachable, and a lot of fun. They’re easy tur turn thanks to the pintail shape and 14-meter turn radius in the 172 cm length. With a nice platform to stand on, the M-Cross 78 will stand up to adventure and off-trail exploration with relative ease. The big story here, though, is the value, as we think a lot of first-time ski buyers should take a square look at the blend of performance and price in the M-Cross 78.

2025 Head Supershape e-Rally Skis

Overview:

This has been a fun one for a number of years now, and it just gets better for 2025. With the addition of Crossforce Carbon in the underfoot zone along with a Better Balance PR wide base plate, the Rally is one of the more comprehensive carving and all-mountain skis here. This ski is fast, and incredibly stable at higher speeds. At the same time, if you want to shorten it up and make some of the cleanest and roundest turns out there, this is a great place to be. It’s so smooth and solid thanks to the World Cup sandwich wood core and dual-metal laminate. Add in the Energy Management Circuit and you’ve got a technology-laden ski that withstands ice, crud, and chop with minimal chatter. More amazingly, it’s actually quite versatile for softer snow and bumps, and while it’s stiff and non-tapered, it can still be mobile on the feet of a strong skier.

2025 Rossignol Forza 70 Skis

Overview:

As another carryover for 2025, the Rossignol Forza 70 is a fun carver with a surprising amount of versatility to it. Based on the shape and looks alone, it appears very rigid and on-piste in nature. While that is true, what caught us off guard was the ski’s happiness in softer snow and bumps and trees. A powder ski it is not, but with a 134 mm tip width in the 173, and a 77 mm waist, it’s apparent that there’s some surface area here. With a reduction of metal in the tip, the skis have a light swing weight and a mobile nature. We love the slalom-style carves it creates, but it is no way demanding when you need to shorten it up and make some crisp and subsequent turns. The 173 produces a 14-meter arc, and while it does like to adhere to that, it’s also more than willing to let it run. It’s the range of this ski that’s so impressive.

Who it's For:

Strong skiers with a good skillset will get the most out of the Forza 70. You prefer crisp and clean arcs in a ski that feels lighter than the performance lets on.

2025 Fischer The Curv GT 80 Skis

Overview:

The new Curv GT 80 is a lot of fun when it comes to carving clean and round turns on the groomers. This ski benefits from a beech and poplar wood core and .5mm thick shaped Ti. This keeps the ski sturdy and smooth when you’re linking the carves. Fischer also uses their E-Triple Radius that more closely mirrors what Volkl does with their 3D Radius Sidecut. This makes for a smoother overall feel in the tips and tails and then underfoot the Curv 80 feels like a competitive race slalom ski. It’s very impressive how the ski can go back and forth between smooth and fast carves and then to a shorter arc with ease. This also makes it more comfortable in an all-mountain setting as it can make good mogul and tight turns when asked without being hooky or grabby overall.

Who it's For:

Performance-oriented skiers who still want a manageable carver. You don’t mind a bit of heft or stiffness, but like some tech like the Triple Radius to make the ski perform as desired.

The 2025 Stance 80 from Salomon gets a graphic refresh for this season but retains the same build and shape. This is great news for skiers looking for a versatile ski in a narrower footprint. Built with a poplar wood core, a metal laminate underfoot, and carbon stringers in the tips and tails, the Stance 80 has a lot of energy to accompany a fun-loving and well-rounded shape. This is probably the best mogul ski on this list as it does contain enough tip and tail rocker as well as a cap construction in the ends to make it swively and fun. There’s a huge range of skier type here, as anyone from a progressing beginner to an accomplished advanced skier can find something to like. At the end of the day, everyone’s going to like the value here, as the Stance 80 has some of the best performance to dollar ratios on the planet.

2025 Stockli Montero AX Skis

Overview:

With some tweaks to the Torsion Control Technology for 2025, the Stockli Montero AX retains its amazing carving performance but brings a subtle yet important change to the mix. While the metal laminates in this ski have had one curved slit cut into it in the past, we now get two. This allows the sides of the ski in the tips and in the tails to articulate and connect to the snow in a more predictable and satisfying manner. It’s almost like the cloven hoof of a mountain goat in that the grip and confidence is increased with the articulation. At slower speeds, this makes for a very rewarding carving experience while at higher speeds, the metal laminates settle down and find their own home, making the stability and power increase accordingly with the speed. At 80 mm underfoot, the AX is a surprisingly capable all-mountain ski with a high-quality feel and very predictable outcomes.

Who it's For:

Carving enthusiasts who do not want to stop where the corduroy ends. You value smoothness, versatility, and quality in a ski.

2025 Nordica Steadfast 80 DC Skis

Overview:

With an updated construction for 2025, the double core world has entered the Steadfast 80’s realm. Featuring the same footprint as the 80 CA from last year, the DC version gets two horizontal layers of lite performance wood and one pulse core laminate. This smooths out the ski and keeps it quiet when it comes to pure on-piste enjoyment. When you add a slight tip and tail rocker profile to the mix, the Steadfast comes alive when adventure enters the chat. These are fantastic mogul skis as they’re easy to turn and light enough to handle mobility and quick turns. In the 174, we’re getting a 15.3-meter turn radius and the Steadfast skis are known for making very clean and round mid-range arcs with uncommon smoothness and predictability. Overall, this is a very fun ski shape, and with the updates in build for this year, we’re stoked to see some smiles on this new Steadfast 80 DC.

2025 Volkl Peregrine 80 Skis

Overview:

It was a lot of fun getting to know the new Peregrine 80 from Volkl this season, and all experiences were positive. It’s very interesting as the width between the Peregrines has shortened, so an 80 vs. 82 on paper doesn’t seem like much, but these are quite different ski experiences. The 80 features a titanal band underfoot and a glass frame wrapping the ski. With slightly less width and a fiberglass pep, the 80 is quite a bit quicker from edge to edge making it an awesome bump ski and an amazing choice for skiers who prefer more z-shaped turns. They’re light, mobile, and make all types of turn styles. As a result of the ease of use, the Peregrine 80 is open to intermediate through expert skiers with no hesitation. They feel like an upscale product with the added benefit of the Low Ride binding integration system that has a more direct connection to the ski than a lot of other systems.

Who it's For:

On-trail enthusiasts who like quickness, agility, bumps, and fun. You want a lot of technology crammed into a relatively narrow ski.

Overview:

This ski is part race ski and part frontside enthusiast, but at the end of the day, it’s all fun. The Spitfire 80 is a carryover ski from last year featuring the same build, shape, and graphics. This is a good thing for skiers who love the precise energy, the stable grip, and the predictable outcome of each and every carve. Built with the double core technology featuring two layers of wood, one sheet of metal, and a pulse core laminate for vibration absorption, these skis are sturdy and fun at the same time. The 174 produces a 16-meter turn radius, so these skis are right at home in the mid-range of carved shapes. With full camber to make for super-smooth arcs and excellent rebound, these wide-bodied carvers suit the needs of demanding skiers looking for action.

2025 Elan Wingman 82 Ti Skis

Overview:

This ski returns unchanged for 2025, remaining a nice option for the higher-end CTi version of this ski. They share the same footprint, so at 82 mm underfoot, they’ve got a nice platform to stand on with a crisp radius and asymmetric rocker profiles. This causes them to be smooth and catch-free when it comes to linking carved turns. The downhill ski gets more camber while the uphill ski sees longer rocker. This makes the ski feel cohesive and natural. In the build, the 82 Ti features a laminated wood core without carbon tubes and a titanal plate underfoot. They’re actually quite stiff still, so there’s not really a performance drop from a stiffness perspective. It’s more that the CTi has that extra pop and damping due to the 360-degree application of carbon. The 11 DIN binding on this ski is a bit of a downgrade from the 12 of the CTi, so that combined with the lack of carbon puts the Ti at about a $200 lower price point—a nice incentive if you’re not sure which way to go.

Who it's For:

Intermediate and advanced skiers who are looking for energy, grip, and smoothness in a mostly front side application. You want some bump and tree performance as well without being overpowered.

Overview:

Built with Dynastar’s Hybrid Core 2.0, the M-Cross 82 continues its reign as one of the more innovative skis in this category from a shape and construction standpoint. We get three layers of poplar wood, each with its own specific role to play in the core. The lower level is solid while the upper two are milled and joined together by friction. This eliminates the need for adhesive layers and reduces the environmental impact. The best part is that the friction created between the two wood laminates provides excellent energy and rebound. Dynastar then adds a central titanal layer to absorb vibration and keep the underfoot zone powerful and grippy. With more of a pin-tail shape to it, you can easily point and steer the ski to its intended direction and the tail follows naturally and cleanly. We get a 14-meter turn radius in the 176, so this thing turns on a dime with great pep and a light weight yet sturdy feel.

Who it's For:

Accomplished skiers who like the traditional feel of a carved turn will like the M-Cross's ability to produce varied shapes and styles of carves.

2025 Elan Wingman 82 CTi Skis

Overview:

With a stiff flex and a crisp turning process, the Elan Wingman 82 CTi is a powerful ski that loads and unloads power with a very strong style. Feel free to stand right on the edge of this ski and feel it come around with cleanliness and vigor. We get Elan’s tubelite wood core with carbon rods, a sheet of metal underfoot, truline technology to boost the inside edge’s power, and an asymmetrical rocker profile that adds smoothness and ease to the mix. In addition to the asymmetric profile, there’s also quite a bit of rocker in the tips and tails, which we think is a good thing in that it allows the ski to break free from the engagement for a bit more versatility. They’re still stiff and precise, though, making tighter spaces like bumps and trees a bit of a chore. Regardless, the carryover Wingman 82 CTi is a fan-favorite when it comes to pep and zest and pure on-trail fun and excitement.

Technically proficient skiers who like to make the most of their time on groomers. You like a precise and energetic feel in a carve.

2025 K2 Disruption 82 Ti Skis

Overview:

This is another fast one. While the ski can handle strong and smooth GS turns, it’s more than capable of letting it run and achieving max velocities. It’s very impressive given that K2 does not have a race program to base its frontside skis off. As such, they take liberties in the construction and design phase that other companies don’t really do. Built with K2’s playful aspen wood core, the Disruption also gets their Titanal I-Beam for smoothness and power. In the forebody and through the tail, K2’s Dark Matter Damping elastomer filters out unwanted vibrations while the Powerwall sidewalls add grip and cohesion to the underfoot zone. As a result, the Disruption 82 Ti brings a lot to the table when it comes to all-mountain carving. This ski has a longer radius comparatively, hitting 18.4-meters in the 177 cm length. This allows for greater stability at speed and smooth performance. Off-trail, it’s kind of a handful.

Who it's For:

Stronger skiers will get the most out of this stiff and rugged carver with a long radius. You should have comfort with speed.

2025 Volkl Peregrine 82 Skis

Overview:

The move from Deacon 84 to Peregrine 82 was no small task. Somehow, they made this beloved ski even better and more sophisticated with the use of a new shape and style. The new 82 is quick, smooth, easy, and fun all while having a very high gear for complete control at speed and in a variety of conditions and terrain. These feel narrower and flatter than the outgoing Deacon, and that adds to the smoothness and seamless transitions between turns. Versatility is added due to the flatter overall profile and the easier to turn tip shape, but the business end of the ski in the tail is still all there so you can let these things rip on firm snow and hard pack all you want. They’re a bit heftier than the 80 due to the added metal in the frame, but they handle the crud and chop with greater ease as a result.

Who it's For:

Strong on-trail skiers looking for a tremendous amount of technology in a ski. You like the feel of energy but with a lower camber height.

2025 Armada Declivity 82 Ti Skis

Overview:

As one of the more all-mountain oriented skis on this list, the new Armada Declivity 82 Ti gets a poplar wood core instead of caruba for 2025, increasing the smoothness and confidence overall. The shape and rocker profile remain the same, but the build contributes to a sturdier feel and a more rewarding ski experience. With a sheet of metal with articulated titanal bands, the Declivity 82 Ti remains one of the most unique skis here as it’s the narrowest of a wider freeride line. This makes it great in the bumps and trees while bringing a powerful carving feel to the groomers and firmer surfaces. The move to poplar makes sense as it provides a quieter ride and isn’t quite as glitchy as the lighter caruba was. There’s a slight loss of pep and pop, but we think most skiers will prefer the new core.

Who it's For:

Freeride-oriented on-piste skiers. It’s a relatively rare breed, but someone out there still wants very narrow freeride skis.
