2025 Men's Narrow Frontside Ski Comparison Lead Image

2025 Men's Narrow Frontside Ski Comparison

OCTOBER 24, 2024 | WRITTEN BY Bob St.Pierre

In this comparison, we’re lining up 22 of the narrowest skis that we could find. These are the pure on-piste racecars. Ranging from 65.5 mm to 75 mm underfoot, the skis on this wall are built and shaped for carving up groomers, ripping down corduroy, and dominating local race circuits. While we’re still falling short of pure FIS racing technology and shaping here, these skis will generally have all you could ever ask for or want when it comes to carving power and edge grip. There’s not a ton of versatility here--most of these skis are built with singularity in mind, and that’s okay, just don’t expect too much in terms of all-mountain performance. Racers, experts, and speed enthusiasts will find a whole lot to like in this narrow range of skis.

Overview:

As one of the narrowest skis on the wall, the Atomic Redster X9S operates best on firm snow with little to no hesitation whatsoever. With measurements of 114/65.5/99.5 in the 175 cm length, this ski produces a 15.2-meter turn radius. That is lightning quick in terms of shape as it basically creates a long slalom feel. We also get an upgraded construction in the X9S with a full ash wood core. Derived right from the race room, the X9S uses that wood core in conjunction with a titanal layer for absorption and stability. Additionally, the steel Revoshock plates in the forebody of the ski create a chatter-free ski experience. This X9S also gets Atomic’s nice X12 system binding for a sturdier feel underfoot. Atomic has a pretty firm grip on the on-piste portion of the ski world, and this is a flagship model for sure.

Who it's For:

Precision-oriented skiers who want to spare no width in their search for the ultimate carved turn. You DO NOT mind a narrow-waisted ski.

Overview:

The Head Supershape e-Original is another ski that falls into the recreational slalom category. As the narrowest of the Supershapes, and with the shortest turn radius, it’s pretty clear that these skis are built and shaped for the shortest turns with the greatest level of stability and balance. Built with a World Cup sandwich wood core, we also get two layers of metal, a graphene strip for stiffening, and Head’s Energy Management Circuit to dampen vibrations and keep the ski smooth, steady, and on its intended line. New this year, we get Crossforce carbon added to the mix in order to stiffen the underfoot zone, as if it were really needed. Anyway, it’s stiffer and more responsive now more than ever, bringing a new level of grip and pop to an already amazing ski.

Strong slalom enthusiasts. You love short turns.

Overview:

Quality, precision, and control are three of the main adjectives when discussing Stockli skis, and that’s certainly the case with the WRT. These skis are incredibly sporty and energetic, thanks in large part to the construction. Built with poplar and beech stringers, the ski is sturdy from the start. With two sheets of titanal, two layers of fiberglass, and two different carbon applications, these skis are poppy and energetic while remaining grippy and stable at a variety of speeds. We get a multi-radius sidecut with these narrow rippers, as the 172 cm length hits 14.8 meters with a 67 mm waist. You definitely want some firm snow to get these on as when it softens up a bit, the narrow waist can dig in and keep the ski from performing at its precise best.

Who it's For:

Accomplished skiers who are not afraid of a narrow shape. You have good balance and skills and are happy making a lot of clean carved turns.

Overview:

With a similar footprint to the WRT, the Pro version of this ski gets an upgrade in the topsheet, as the Titec Pro upper level provides an insane level of smoothness and silence to the ski. There’s total confidence here, in a multitude of turn shapes and styles, but the main caveat is that firmer snow is better—it's like a powder ski but for ice and groomers. With the 67 mm waist, the ski creates a 14.8-meter arc in the 172, but you can certainly open it up and allow it to access upper velocities and speeds with comfort. These skis are just so darn smooth and quiet—it feels like there’s nothing underfoot except for pure g-forces. Built with a poplar and beech core, two sheets of metal, fiberglass, and carbon power turn technology, the WRT Pro is solid, stable, and surprisingly agile.

Upper end skiers looking for a top end product in both quality and performance.

Overview:

Much like the Atomic S9 and the Supershape Original, the Head Rebels E-SL Pro is as close as it gets to the real race ski. What separates it from an FIS model is both shape and build. The Rebels is very close, but the pure WC SL ski still has a denser core and a more personalized shape that conforms to true FIS specifications. If you’re looking for short turns, endless power, and an insane amount of energy, this is the place to be. With a WC race plate on the ski to take a Head/Tyrolia race binding, a 68 mm waist width, and a 12-meter turn radius in the 160 cm length, these skis are poised and ready to make some of the shortest and most energetic turns possible. There’s a ton of tech here as well, with a strong wood core, two sheets of titanal, a graphene laminate, and Head’s Energy management Circuit to reduce vibrations. This all adds up to a race-inspired ski that’s built to make short, subsequent turns from top to bottom.

Who it's For:

Racers who are looking for the best possible performance in a civilian-purposed ski. You want the feel of being a competitive slalom skier.

Overview:

As one of the few actual slalom skis we have here, the Redster S9 takes many queues from the actual ski that Mikaela skis on, bringing a lot of the race room into the recreational world. With measurements of 118/68/104 in the 165 cm length, the S9 creates a paltry 12.5-meter turn radius. Be prepared to make a lot of turns on this ski as it is quite one-dimensional in this regard. Technical skiers looking for the most precise and sharp turns out there will eventually find their way to a ski like the S9. While you may or may not choose to compete in a local slalom race, you will surely get the best on-trail performance when it comes to short and contiguous turns on the planet. If you ski at a resort that has long runs, beware that you will have tired legs.

Who it's For:

Skiers who value short turns with a slalom character. You are very sure that this is what you want in a ski.

Overview:

With a wood core built from poplar and ash in their True Blend Race format, the Blizzard Firebird WRC also features three layers of titanal. There aren’t too many skis out there in the world that can boast this type of build. As a result, this is one of the sturdiest, smoothest, and most stable skis made today, and that does make it an ideal choice for aggressive skiers and former racers who are looking for the most possible performance anywhere. Versus true FIS skis, this one basically just has a thinner core profile and a friendlier shape. The 175 cm length in this ski gets a 17.5-meter arc while the 68 mm underfoot width keeps you glued to the snow regardless of firmness. The ski uses an FDT Race Plate Pro with an XCell 14 binding on it, highlighting the high-end nature of this setup.

Overview:

As a straight-shooter with a lot of GS influence, the Atomic Redster G9 is a race-like ski with a narrow overall shape. The 68 mm width underfoot is bookended by 110 mm tips and 96.5 mm tails. This generates an 18.2-meter turn radius in the 177 which is about as fast as it gets in the citizens ski world. If you want longer and faster, you kind of have to go to the FIS shaping at that point. We get a Power wood core consisting of poplar and ash and two sheets of titanal for a powerful and smooth and dynamic feel. We also get the Revoshock steel plates that further dampen the ski’s vibrations. The balance point can be tricky for skiers who aren’t used to such a narrow platform, but it can also be incredibly rewarding and necessary for when the snow gets super firm.

Expert skiers who are either almost racers or who are former racers and are looking for as close as possible to that level of ski.

Overview:

With the same build as the R15 but with a narrower shape and shorter turn radius, the Thunderbird R13 has more of a slalom mentality. We get Blizzard’s True Blend Piste wood core with more beech than poplar, especially through the middle chord of the ski. Add two sheets of titanal and an Active Carbon Armor binding reinforcement and these skis are ready to plant themselves firmly on edge in the hardest of snowpacks. In the reference size of 165 cm, this ski generates a 13-meter turn radius, aligning it with competitive slalom shapes and full-on race ski arcs. It’s a bit more approachable, though, with a slightly wider 70 mm waist width, keeping a bit more of a platform to balance on if the snow degrades throughout the day. With this narrow waist and short turn radius, the Thunderbird R13 is an awesome on-piste weapon for skiers who love the feeling of precision and power at the same time.

Who it's For:

Strong skiers with a preference for short and quick arcs. You value a strong and sturdy feel but not a full-on race ski.

Overview:

Built with a full camber profile and a shorter turn radius, the Atomic Redster X7 is primed and ready for energetic and zesty turns down the fall line on firm snow and hard pack. With a 70 mm waist, these skis are on the narrow side, but the carbon influence and lighter binding system allows them to be more agile and mobile than its more metal-clad brethren. In the 176, the X7 creates a 15.5-meter turn radius, but allows skiers to go back and forth between short and long due to the multi radius sidecut profile. With a power wood core construction consisting of poplar and ash, the skis are smooth and solid at virtually any speeds. While the waist is narrow, the lighter weight of the carbon Revoshock plates adds some pep to the ski’s character and allows for slightly easier usability.

Who it's For:

Skiers who love energy and rebound will get along great with the Redster X7. You value a sharp underfoot zone but don’t want a full-on race ski.

Overview:

At the top end of the quality carving world, the Nordica Dobermann Multigara stands proud. These skis, with amazing fit and finish, are some of the most complete carvers out there today that do not fall into the race world. Built with Nordica’s Double Core construction, the skis get two layers of performance wood, two layers of metal, and a pulse core for damping. The skis also get a full camber profile, a race-oriented shovel, and a zinc/aluminum plate that directly transfers energy from the boot to the ski. In the 175 cm length, the ski generates a 16-meter turn radius, making it a mid-range radius for mixing slalom and GS turn shapes and styles. The skis are 70 mm underfoot, making them narrow enough for race-like performance, with a slight amount of width for mixed groomer conditions. With top-end quality and precision from tip to tail, the Multigara is the cream of the crop in terms of sturdy on-piste performers.

Overview:

With a lighter wood core, but still all of the Stockli goodies that keep the ski on the quiet, smooth, and stable side of the spectrum, the Laser SX is an amazing choice for skiers looking for an awesome groomer ski with no drawbacks. At 70 mm underfoot and with a 16-meter turn radius, the SX can handle more mid-range carves than some of the slalom-oriented skis of the group. It also has the slightest amount of rocker to it that keeps some ease of use in the forefront of the conversation. Turtle Shell 2.0 is found in this ski, giving an easier entry and exit from the turn thanks to the wave cuts in the titanal in the front and rear of the ski. This gives the ski an easier low-end to achieve without losing any of the Stockli smoothness, power, or precision.

This ski returns unchanged for 2025, bringing a smooth yet energetic blend of attributes to the mix. Built with a smooth beech wood core and a full titanal layer, the skis also get an LCT strip and a V-shape to the metal. This brings the stiffness and smoothness aligned for proper power and grip. At 71 mm underfoot, these skis are on the narrow side, but it makes sense given the 18-meter arc in the 177. Overview:

The Stockli Laser SC is a very well-rounded ski for the width. At 72 mm underfoot, the SC is the natural progression from the SX through the Montero AS. We are built with a blend of poplar and beech in the wood core with two sheets of metal and Stockli’s awesome rubber dust. They also add their Flex Torsion Control to the mix, with the slits in the metal allowing for greater articulation and grip at lower speeds. With a slightly softer shovel than some of the other skis in this range, the SC is easy to turn and yet has a very high-performance ceiling. The black sidewalls carry over from last year, delivering a new level of grip and energy through the carved turn. The 170 cm length produces a 14.9-meter turn radius, keeping fans of both long and short turns fully engaged. This ski is great in the bumps and other technical zones where confidence and skills are needed.

Overview:

With slightly different dimensions and build than the LT version, the Hero MT is more of a mid-range and mid-radius ski with a slightly wider footprint overall. Built with a lighter poplar wood core, the skis get a titanal beam underfoot and a carbon alloy matrix throughout. This provides energy and pep while keeping the middle of the ski smooth, powerful, and stable. Thanks to the 74 mm waist and the 15-meter turn radius in the 175, the skis have a nice platform to stand on, making the ski less demanding and more engaging than other skis with razor-thin waists. While pure racers may look for something more when it comes to top-end performance and carving prowess, the more all-mountain oriented carvers will fit right in with the Hero MT’s willingness and ability to move through groomers with variance and fun when it comes to turn shapes and styles.

But sticking to just numbers, the new Kastle MX 74 finds its home here among the narrow race skis, and that’s just fine with us. We get the two horizontal wood cores, one sheet of metal, and a pulse core laminate for damping. While this ski doesn’t have the full-on double Ti build, it’s still more than steady and sturdy for expert and aggressive skiers. Built with a power wood core consisting of poplar and ash, we get a full titanal layer and Revoshock damping plates. This ski, as a result, is very much glued to the snow regardless of how firm the conditions may be. With a full camber profile and a 13.5-meter turn radius in the 168 cm length, this ski is built and shaped to turn on a dime with no loss of performance or stability at speed. Versus the wider Q9.8, the narrower 9 is more on-piste oriented and happier in true hard pack snow. We love the race-like X12 binding system and the sturdy overall feel. Overview:

In the mid-80's All-Mountain Comparison, we talked about high-end intermediate skis, and the V8 is a prime example in this collection. Since there are a lot of intermediate skiers out there in the world, it makes sense to make a good ski in that category with a lot of technology and sophistication. Head’s Shape V8 contains a light karuba wood core, carbon, graphene, and an Energy Management Circuit to reduce vibrations, the V8 is a clean carver with a lightweight feel. It also has a very short turn radius with a 13.2-meter arc in the 170 cm length. That’s slalom-esque, and when you tip this ski up on edge it certainly comes right around. For skiers that are looking to improve their carving in an on-trail setting this short arc and total tip to tail edge contact will make those dreams into a fast reality. Off-trail, it’s on the stiff side and likes to turn a lot, so hookiness and grabbiness do enter the conversation.

Who it's For:

Progressing carvers looking to take their turning skills to the next level. You value precision and short arcs.

Overview:

This ski falls more into the fun intermediate carver portion of the list, and that’s a good thing because there’s a lot of skiers in this zone. At 75 mm underfoot, this ski features the same construction as the MT CAM from Rossignol, but in a different shape with a shorter arc. The Forza 60 uses a poplar wood core, a titanal beam, and carbon alloy matrix for stiffness and response. In the 171, we’re getting a shorter 13-meter arc which is great for more concise turns on groomers. There’s an exceptional amount of rebound here as well, keeping the ski in the more accomplished portion of the ski list. Now in the wider zone of narrow front side skis, the Forza 60 is more capable than some others when it comes to bumps, packed out trees, and broken snow conditions throughout the day. Since the skis are relatively manageable and have this added versatility, there’s more of an audience here versus some of the more specific options out there.

Overview:

With a lighter overall weight and a slighlty lower binding system, the Atomic Redster Q7 is a more energetic and budget-friendly version of the high-powered Q9. We still get a power wood core consisting of poplar and ash, a full sheet of titanal, and a stiffer Ultrawall sidewall zone in the underfoot area. Instead of the steel Revoshock plates in the Q9, the 7 gets carbon ones. This lightens the load and increases the pep of the ski as a result. For 2025, we also see the M12 binding system used, which is another weight savings technique. It’ll hold you in just fine, but with the absence of the plate throughout the zone, the ski is capable of flexing more with less of a dead spot. This ski, at 75 mm underfoot and with good mobility, ends up being a pretty good bump ski in addition to a quick carver on the steeps and groomers.

Who it's For:

Energetic carvers who like a little bounce in their skis. You value grip and pep over total power and pure damping.
