2026 Men's Mid 80 mm Frontside Ski Comparison

2026 Men's Mid 80 mm Frontside Ski Comparison

OCTOBER 24, 2025 | WRITTEN BY Bob St.Pierre

Having the proper ski for the right conditions and terrain is of the utmost importance. We’ve noted for a while now that for most skiers, having a dedicated ski in the low to mid-80's underfoot is a great place to be since many skiers spend much of their time on groomed surfaces and smoother terrain. The powder days are great, but if we’re talking numbers, percentages, and getting the most bang for your buck in terms of alignment, then this is the right place to be. The skis in this list vary from generally easy to turn intermediate carvers all the way to rock-solid and steady skis with race-like constructions, albeit in a wider footprint. The wider skis give a good balance point and a solid platform to stand on for when the snow degrades throughout the day while skis closer to 80 mm here deliver quickness and agility to go along with supreme edge grip. If you spend most of your time on-trail, on-piste, or on the front side of the resort, these are good, common-sense skis. Enjoy!

Overview:

Easy to turn, versatile, and uncomplicated, the Atomic Maverick 84 is a great value-oriented bundle that will help skiers progress and improve without going broke. You get skis and bindings for under $500, and since they carry with it a lot of the Maverick style and influence, you’re sure to be getting a nice set of skis. At 84 mm underfoot, they handle both groomers and mild off-piste skiing with grace. The value comes from blending a poplar wood core with densolite form in a duracap sidewall construction. While there’s a titanal layer under the core, it’s still limited to intermediate skiing at moderate speeds. We do see some nice taper here to contribute to easier turning in slightly softer snow, but these skis work even better in smoother conditions and mellower terrain.

Who it's For:

Entry level and value-oriented skiers who want proven technology and shaping.

Overview:

Built with higher-end componentry, the Salomon Stance 80 has a lot to offer a lot of skiers. For the most part, a Stance 80 skier will be budget-conscious, but also wants a quality product. These skis excel both on groomers and in the bumps. They’re quick, easy to turn, and have a lot of rebound and energy. They are not difficult to use, yet have a surprisingly high performance ceiling. Built with a layer of metal and carbon stringers, there’s a lot of tech here to go along with proven Stance shaping. Since this is a pared-down Stance 84, there’s notable rocker and taper making the ski fare quite well in adverse conditions and terrain. This is not just an on-piste carver, the Stance 80 has a good skill set and operates well in a variety of applications.

Who it's For:

Skiers who want a good mix of quality and value. You don’t want to totally sacrifice performance for cost.

Overview:

The Nordica Steadfast 80 is a very smooth and calculated ski with a love for medium-radius carves. While the Stance 80 is more versatile and well-rounded, this one operates best on groomed and smooth surfaces. Thanks to the horizontal wood cores and the pulse core laminate, the Steadfast 80 absolutely cruises easily and quietly. It makes very good short and medium carves in addition to being grippy and front-side focused without being too angular. These skis feel solid and substantial but by no means overpowering. While on-piste is a bit more focused than off with these skis, we’re still impressed with the ski’s ability to maneuver in bumps and tighter spaces.

Who it's For:

Intermediate skiers who like to be engaged in a carved turn and prefer to stay on smooth and groomed terrain.

Overview:

The Head Shape e-V10 is a shining example of an intermediate level ski that punches way above its level in terms of quality of materials and technology. These skis use a caruba wood core, carbon, graphene, and an energy management circuit to mitigate vibrations. That’s a lot of tech for an “intermediate” ski. And it’s really only a mid-range ski because Head has both Kore and Supershape above this one, so it’s third in line within Head’s catalog. There’s a lot of long camber, minimal to zero taper and rocker, and a short radius. The skis are on the stiffer side, relatively speaking, so the precision and engagement are all right there. These skis are very comfortable on groomers and in purely carved turns. They don’t skid all that well due to the mix of construction and flex.

Who it's For:

Intermediate skiers who are interested in quality and precision over versatility and off-piste capabilities.

Overview:

With a high-end capacity and a lot of energy, this short to mid-radius carver is capable of very clean and round turns with a solid and stable platform to stand on. Based on the same mold as the Redster Q9.8, the 7.8 features less metal, more carbon, and a lighter system binding for advancing skiers. At 84 mm underfoot, it’s a wider-bodied front side ski for sure, allowing good purchase on firm snow to go along with the ability to bust through crud and chop later in the day as conditions degrade. This ski is all about linking carved turns and stringing them together from top to bottom. While it’s a bit easier than the 9.8, it’s still got some stiffness and power to it, making it a fun option for those looking for performance without being overly demanding.

Who it's For:

Skiers who aren’t terribly aggressive but still want a ripping front side ski with some width to it.

Overview:

This is a ski that more people should get on. We don’t always get the chance when skiing with our friends from Dynastar, but when we do, it really jumps off the page. While the M-Cross 88 gets top billing from a performance standpoint, the narrower 82 is just as fun and surprisingly agile and athletic to boot. These skis are fun, exciting, and hold up quite well to more aggressive angles and higher speeds. Since they’re a bit more flexible than the wider 88, they also can be used easier at variable turn shapes. In the bumps and in softer snow, the wider shovel stays afloat and motors right along. It’s a smooth-feeling ski due to the polyurethane along the sides of the core. Overall, this is a very complete and comprehensive ski with a quick carving nature to go along with capable width and rocker. While camber is dominant, the shovel is amenable to softer snow and variable conditions.

Who it's For:

Good skiers who have good technique and like to mix turn shapes, styles, and terrain.

Overview:

The all-new Blizzard Stormbird 80 Ti is a fun frontside carver with a sharper shape and more precise feel than most. This is the continuation of skis like Nordica’s Spitfire 80, consisting of a single metal laminate to go along with a True Blend wood core. Blizzard also uses damping material in the tips and tails to keep a smooth and quiet ride. Whie they don’t hold up as well to aggressive skiing as the dual-metal version of the ski, they do just fine especially for skiers looking for something crisp and with the capacity to finish turns with vigor. The flatter tail and front side shape make this a carving ski first and an all-mountain option kind of a distant second. The main point here is to enjoy your time on the groomers and link clean carved turns. Not many skis at this level offer the sophistication of a true blend core, so consider yourself lucky if you get on these skis and make some deep arcs on the trails.

Who it's For:

Precise skiers who want a lot of snow feel and sophistication without going full-on race-style.

Overview:

Quick, fun, and incredibly precise, the Volkl Peregrine 80 returns unchanged for the 2026 year other than a graphic update. This ski benefits from Volkl’s large arsenal of engineering and design properties, making it an extremely useful ski for most resort activities. While the stiffer and denser Peregrine 82 gets higher marks for stability at speed, power, and overall smoothness, the Peregrine 80 is quicker, livelier, and we think more versatile. Due to the lighter weight and easier turning capacity, the 80 is a better bump ski, and since there’s only a 2 mm difference in width, it’s simply easier to use in trees and off-piste zones. Thanks to Volkl’s 3D Radius, you can make a variety of turn shapes and styles with ease, as that multi-radius sidecut works very well in conjunction with the flatter overall camber profile.

Who it's For:

Steady skiers who favor shorter carves and more z-shaped turns on the sides of the trails.

Overview:

With a rounder shape and style than many other skis on this list, the Fischer Curv 80 GT is a whole lot of fun without being too punishing or demanding. This ski is another full carryover from 2025, bringing the same construction and graphics into 2026. Built with a poplar and beech wood core to go along with a full sheet of metal, the Curv 80 is a short to medium-radius carver with a lot of camber to deliver fast energy and rebound. While a ski like the Peregrine 80 holds up better in shorter more skidded turns, the Curv 80 is a smoother and rounder ski that can deliver deeper arcs, but without the same amount of versatility whether in turn shape, style, or terrain. These are not totally versatile in an off-piste capacity, rather the Curv 80 GT is much happier on groomed and on-piste situations.

Overview:

If you’ve kept up over the years, you’d be keenly aware that we’re big fans of the capabilities and versatility of the Salomon Stance 84. While that will continue into the 2026 season, we’re honestly somewhat nervous about what it’ll do in the upcoming years, mainly with the implementation of the Stance Pro 82 and 86 bookending this 84. Now offered as a system only, the Stance 84 has not changed in construction, shape, or nature. It has enough rocker and taper to be considered a true all-mountain ski, but then for most intermediate and progressing skiers, the carving performance is also really fun. It’s notable that you will not get the same on-piste performance as some of the bulkier and burlier 85’s out there, but it’s adequate at least. The big benefit here is the off-trail or off-piste performance, specifically in moguls. You can maneuver this ski very easily and it has a very balanced mix of energy, pop, and flex that makes it simple to wiggle through tight bump lines whether they’re firm or soft.

Who it's For:

Anyone looking for a crisp all-mountain ski to help them improve in the bumps and on the groomers. This ski has a deceptively high-end feel.

Overview:

Similar to the Stance 84, the Nordica Steadfast 85 has amazing universal appeal. This is the type of ski that almost everyone, at every level, can ski and enjoy. We found that this ski makes very clean and round turns, while having a very solid and stable feel. Thanks to the horizontal wood laminates and a single sheet of metal in the middle, the Steadfast 85 is a dream to get up on edge and ride through the arc. There’s some versatility here, but that’s more reserved for advanced and expert skiing—the carving on this ski is accessible for a lot broader audience. With a shorter to mid-range turn radius, the Steadfast 85 is very composed in that shape and style. While it may not achieve super stability at top speeds, it’s very clean in the mid-range.

Overview:

We were pretty stoked on the new K2 Blur XT this past year, and that enthusiasm ranged from the front side to the crud and softer snow and everything in between. While for many skiers, this will be a bit of a throwback to the iKonic series from about 7 or 8 years ago, it also represents a more manageable and fun version of the Disruption 82 Ti that was a bit of a handful. This Blur XT, at 83 mm underfoot, is a deceptively good soft snow ski with a wider shovel and more of an all-mountain feel. That said, it’s still very composed and powerful in an on-trail format, making it a useful and valuable tool for most days within the resort. These skis feature a titanal H-Beam that provides power to the edges while allowing for torsional flex within the forebody and aft portions of the ski to create a smoother feel overall.

Overview:

As we progress through this list, we’re entering the dual-metal laminate sectors, and that means increased stability, power, and demand. The Blizzard Stormbird 82 DTi is a new ski for 2026 that closely resembles the Thunderbird R15 82 in all facets. We get a True Blend wood core in this ski, but it is more of the “sport” version versus the “piste” so a bit less of a race feel in this ski. That said, it still has two sheets of metal and a strong and sturdy overall feel in order to generate a lot of power and energy on firm snow and ice. While the on-piste performance gets an uptick, the versatility takes a bit of a hit. These skis aren’t particularly friendly or exemplary in an off-piste situation, but they do fare well in crud, chop, and degraded groomer conditions. With a mid-range radius providing solid carving on-piste, these are smooth and capable carvers with a high-end feel.

Overview:

Whereas the rest of the Peregrine series has changed in shape and style over the years, the V.Werks has remained largely the same, and we think that’s great. Traditionally, the V.Werks line has been used as experimental and prototypical, and this Peregrine has been at the forefront of this. By mixing a lighter wood core with a tailored titanal frame and a carbon jacket, these skis paved the way for many of the Volkl’s we see today, including the Mantras and current Peregrines. What’s amazing about these skis is that they’re able to achieve such a high-performance level at a lower weight. That said, the thinness of the core can be a bit unnerving for a lot of skiers who need just a bit more substance underfoot for proper balance. These skis just don’t do it for you—you must put in the effort to get the proper performance. At 84 mm underfoot and with a lighter weight and a flatter profile, these skis are indeed capable of versatility. Again, the thinness of the ski can feel a bit catchy if you’re not well balanced.

Strong skiers who like the feel of a high-end ski in a lighter package.

Overview:

These skis are incredibly smooth and quiet, all while bringing a mix of high performance and ease of use to the table. At the same time, these skis use Torsion Flex Control in both tips and tails to allow for easier articulation at lower speeds to keep things interesting in fun even while not going top speed. Due to the somewhat more flexible shovels, these skis are fantastic in bumps, but don’t get complacent—the tails of the skis are very robust and active. Overview:

While the slightly narrower and less metallic Peregrine 80 excels in short turns with lots of energy, the Peregrine 82 fits skiers who are looking for increased speed and longer turns with higher levels of stability and power. Both are certainly capable of feeding advanced and expert skiers all the performance that they can eat, but the Peregrine’s added heft due to construction and binding makes it a bit more solid and demanding. These skis prefer more of a GS or racer style and they have the performance level to back it up. While the 80 may feel more at home in short turns, bumps, and more technical zones, the 82 likes it fast. Thanks to Volkl’s use of two metal laminates and a tailored carbon tip, the Peregrine 82 makes turn initiation quick and easy while the flatter profile paired with the 3D Radius is a techy skier’s dream come true.

Strong, stable and tough to maneuver, the Fischer Curv GT 85 is a wide-bodied carver with race-like ingredients. While it contains a full beech core and two sheets of .8 mm thick titanal, it’s still somewhat manageable, mainly due to the thinner overall core profile. These things love to turn and carve, and many skiers find some versatility here when it comes to variable conditions and terrain. Overview:

If you like making metronomically shaped and timed turns, this is your ski. The Redster Q9.8 is an amazing option for cutting arcs down groomers of any style, as most ski runs don’t stay the same all day. These will not care, they’ll simply continue on their carving path and you better be ready to keep up. With a sturdy and hefty feel, the Redster Q9.8 adds more metal to the mix over the 7.8, and adds a better, stronger, and heavier system to the mix to add a heavier binding. Underfoot, there’s a ton of edge grip and power, making it easy to stand on and lean into the turns. While versatility and off-trail capacity aren’t strengths here, linking planted carved turns on these skis is a tough act to follow.
